Done it loads of times whilst walking some long distance trails. Penning Way, West Highland Way, Yorkshire Wolds Way.

The views where I've stayed at on the Cleveland Way couldn't be surpassed by any hotel in the world. Stunning.

Not sure if that's the same experience as sleeping out on the streets of somewhere like here in Seattle amongst the drug dealers/addicts, gangs, human traffickers, mentally ill, rats, excrement etc. Your experience I wouldn't mind, the one I describe is not so appealing.

Only in forces. What I hated in winter on the moors snow an wet and freezing.
We had two sets of gear.
Get in tent at night and put nice dry kit on to sleep.
Then in the icy morning , putting wet icy kit back on. I hate tenting 😊

Noooo I would never do it in Seattle. No chance.
I appreciate that I have a choice and only do it for a few days whereas some do not.

It does focus the mind though and gives an appreciation of what some people are up against.
The main thing is that the important things in life become much more primitive. Paying a mortgage or will there be heavy traffic on the M1 become irrelevant and it's all about keeping dry, warm and do I have enough drinking water for the next few hours. I would imagine that's similar to street life.
A protective bull can also improve the PB for a 100m dash so it's not always completely safe.
Don't eat brightly coloured mushrooms either
