    We've been too slow

    Reacting to this pandemic.

All the signs suggest that in two weeks, we will be where Italy are.

People were flying into London from Italy and China without checks at the start of March. The Cheltenham festival, theatre shows and other large concerts were still going ahead only last weekend. The slower response to close bars and restaurants compared to other European countries. The fact we are still not locked down.

I don't doubt that these are hard decisions to make. But we'll look back on them in some months and ask if they were done at the right time. Thousands of lives have been put at risk because of this delay.

I rarely agree with you but on this occasion 100% agree with you!!! Borders wide open - urging people to do something is a waste of time - u turns on communications. Boris needs to look to China and think - why the f ook are there not many deaths now!!!! Even with pubs and restaurants closing - it should have been immediate and how many youngsters went out on Friday night to get pissed!!

Next there will be a lock down which should have happened weeks ago!!! Not impressed with all this dithering.

I do know the army and reservists are ready to be mobilised as have family in the services!

Anybody who defies the law - take their license away for ever- ****in morons!

Sad the army have been brought on the verge of mobilisation and know that from a family member!! So many selfish
    morons around!!!

Boris - you need to get tougher!!!!

The Chinese have no choice but to do what they are told. Their govt sent out a text message and it was received by everyone because in China the govt has access to EVERY phone.

The British are some of the most law abiding folk in Europe. Doesn't mean to say we haven't got our share of idiots.

You said this 4 days ago (been meaning to say well done for such asensible post)

"I think the reaction from them was slow initially, but now I'm happy to give them the benefit of the doubt given this is an unprecedented situation. I really do hope they make the correct decisions from herein, having said that I am no expert on this - so I don't know what those decisions are or where this pandemic will take us."

So have you become an expert in those days?

I can only assume the Govt are doing what the medical and scientific experts are telling them to do. They must have confidence in their 'different' approach because if they have got it badly wrong and the UK cops for it worse than our neighbours they will never be forgiven.

    Nope, still no expert.

The only thing that has changed in the last four days is seeing some recent data about how our confirmed cases and deaths are mirroring the trajectory of Italy's as of 2 weeks ago. I had originally suspected that we had been too slow to react, but those figures confirm we are on a similar path.

Having said all of that, I still hope that we make the right decisions going forwards. I really want Boris and his advisers to get this right. And in time, we can then look back and judge whether we have been correctly guided or not.

    Make your mind up.

Are you in the definitive 'we've been too slow' as per this thread or the 'we can then look back and judge whether we have been correctly guided or not' as per your last post?.

A few days ago, I suspected we had been too slow to react. Now that suspicion has gained even further traction looking at the recent daily figures and situation in Italy. But I could be wrong.

I've always been of the view that we have to give the Government the benefit of the doubt to make decisions on our behalf throughout this crisis, and look back in the future and judge them then. To be honest, I'm no expert on whether we should have adopted this 'herd immunity' approach, which we initially did. It will all come out in the wash at some point. I just want them to make the correct decisions and prevent unnecessary deaths, but I'm not sure if we are going to know this until some time in the future...

My initial thinking, is that we have been too slow to react.

The government is following advice from scientists and medical experts, I assume that you don’t know better than they do, so no point in being critical of them. I am sure the government and those experts are doing their best, let’s all applaud their efforts and refrain from knocking them.
