Think he was a right back, made his debut under Larry Lloyd but soon left for Charlton. 83 apps for West Brom suggests he probably would have been a better option than Paul Smalley or Willie McStay.

Pedro was one of my favourite players from the seventies and eighties. When Tristan Benjamin established himself at right back Jimmy Sirrel moved Pedro to sweeper at the start of the 1980/81 campaign. It was an inspired move, seeing Notts promoted to the top flight. The three seasons in the top division were Pedro's best for Notts. He really showed his class.

Born to a Spanish mother, he was brought up by his grandparents in Spain for his first 12 years. His mother then married and came to England, where the family settled in the Meadows. He began to excel at football and was taken on as an apprentice by Notts at the age of 15.

The rest is history. He was one short of 400 league appearances for the Magpies. His end was tragic, having become somewhat of a recluse, he contracted pneumonia, was reluctant to seek proper treatment, and died two days before Christmas 2001, at the age of 45.

I knew him and bumped into him in town one night, on one of my trips back. Without going into details, it was sad to see what was going on. A lot of my mates went to school with him; he was a top bloke.

Also bumped into Pedro one night in the city center. Really enjoyed chatting with him, we namechecked the whole 1976 team. I was completely new to football in 1976, and its only when I look back I start to realise what a good player he was. Its 44 years now , but I seem to remember Pedro made things look effortless, had timing and a bit of skill to boot.
