    Sol Campbell leaves Southend

Former England defender Sol Campbell has left his role as manager of Southend United by mutual consent.

The 45-year-old took charge of the Shrimpers last October, but won only four of his 23 games in charge.

Southend were relegated after the League One season was ended in June, three months after matches were halted by the coronavirus pandemic.

"Whilst it was a difficult time fighting relegation, I still enjoyed the experience," Campbell said.

Former Macclesfield manager Campbell had been appointed at Southend on a deal until the end of the 2021-22 season.

His assistants Hermann Hreidarsson, Andy Cole and Tony Colbert have also left the club.

"There are obviously frustrations with how the season ended abruptly, and with what points we feel we could have been amassed," he said.

"The club have an exciting future with the plans for the new stadium in place, but with the current global Covid-19 situation having a profound effect on businesses, I am keen not to be a financial burden to the club."

Just goes to show that if you are a former international player you are not necessarily going to be a good manager.

Will he now be returning to pursue his once held ambition to be mayor of London??

Seems his time at Macc could turn out to be a bit of a fluke then, given the results he got whilst at Sarfend. Shame is was us who suffered.

Southend looked a lost cause before he went there and it doesn't alter the fact he worked a minor miracle at Macc. He's got character and is prepared to put the work in, Deserves another chance somewhere if he's still up for it.

Agree with this completely. He could quite easily go and get a job managing an academy side, yet has taken on tough tasks at both of the of clubs he has managed.

Totally agree, he's been in a no win situation both times. Both clubs were and still are in dire straits.

Absolutely. Sol obviously made an impact at Macclesfield and saved them from relegation. Southend whilst a league higher were a sinking ship.

I would like to see him have a go at a more stable League Two club that has aspirations of getting promoted to League One. A club like an Exeter who needs that bit extra special push and quality.

What have Exeter ever done to upset you?

Seriously though I think Sol could be a big asset to the right club but I don't see him as level headed enough to be the number 1 based on some of the guff he's come out with in the past. I hope he sees sense and puts his ego to one side and takes a supporting role that will help him develop.

It's not just him though, we have had many top class black players but how many have been given a chance to manage?
I know that being a top player doesn't make you a top manager but surely you would think a few could do a good job if given the chance.
