This link gives some very vivid details of this forgotten tragedy.

Scum, mon ami, it's not forgotten. I have posted at length on here and Banter about this terrible event.

Not bad for you, Patty. I'm still waiting for the towel btw.

For those not quite sure where this was, the boat yard was roughly where the old Tesco was, so more Rotherham centre than Masborough.

Yes, I believe the slipway can still be seen on Forge Island. In the 60s the cellars of the Bridge Inn were reputed to be haunted by the dead from the affair.

Thanks for that. I wondered what the exact place is.

    Why no memorial on site?

I think it’s because Forge Lane faded into disuse as buildings like Tesco were built there. The footpath past Tesco from Bridge Street went between Tesco and the river, Forge Lane was on the other side between Tesco and the canal, so not a major thoroughfare

There is a memorial in the Rotherham Minster and there was one at the Walker Mausoleum in Masbrough. This has fallen into disrepair. I won't say why because I get into trouble but it's religious. Btw, I am firmly on the side of Masbrough NOT Masborough. Others may disagree.
