Maidstone furlough all players & staff

    Maidstone United:

"The directors have been left with no option but to furlough contracted players & office staff".

If the League continues, the club "will look to field a team of non-contract & loan players representing the club for no payment."

They've only played 13 games so I'd expect the NL North and South to be null and void soon. There's no way they can fit all those fixtures in before the end of the season.

Furlough ends at the end of April and players contracts are until July so only getting 2 maybe 3 furlough payments.

Iffon when play resumes the sensible option would be for NL North and South to have a shortened season, playing each other once,to maintain the integrity of the league structure with promotion and relegation.

    Surely that is illegal?

I thought you could only furlough staff if there is no work available because of Covid.

    That's my understanding, as well.

I don't think the scheme covers furloughing players and replacing them by players who will play for free!

"The scheme pays some of the wages of people who can't do their jobs because their workplace is closed, or there is no longer enough work for them. They may also be unable to work because they are clinically extremely vulnerable and cannot work safely, or they have caring responsibilities due to coronavirus, such as looking after children."

    Yes, this would be fraud.
