Found out today that it appears I have glaucoma in my left eye and I need to see an eye specialist.

Does anyone on here suffer from this condition?

Yes, I do, in both eyes, I was diagnosed a few years ago. I was give laser treatment for it; the laser punches a small hole in each eye to relieve the pressure. The procedure doesn’t hurt, just slightly unpleasant, like a very mild electric shock. The darker your eyes the longer it takes. The woman performing the laser job on me wasn’t very experienced, I think, as the first shot knocked my head right back with a big shock, she said ‘Oh dear, I think that I had better turn the power down’! If it’s done properly, though, as I said, nothing to worry about. Of course, you may not need that treatment. I was also put on eye drops for life and in the past three years, my condition has not worsened, so hopefully the treatment is having the desired effect. I only require glasses for reading, nothing to do with the glaucoma. You have to report the condition to the DVLA and they send you for an eye test to check that you’re fit to drive. They require a test every three years, assuming nothing affects your sight earlier.

I had the same optician for 30 years who I really trusted and I’m not 100% convinced that the young Asian lady who did me today is correct about this so I’m going to see an eye specialist privately.

She was very keen to sell me new glasses and get me back into contact lenses as well and this commercial push made me a bit uneasy.

I trusted my old optician totally.

It was an optician that told me to see a specialist, following a routine eye test. See the specialist and if you have the beginnings of glaucoma, take the treatment as it will slow it right down or halt the progression. Anyway, one’s sight does deteriorate as age takes its toll but fortunately, the treatment is usually effective. Good luck.

My sight is actually improving with age Kets.

My prescription is now miles lower than it was 35 years ago, done conditions actually improve with age due to the eye muscle changing.

Improved eyesight but glaucoma.......you couldn’t make it up🤣

If you were in the US you would be able to get prescriptions for a certain herb to help you with the pain mate

Not really painful in general BS.

I’ve suffered migraines since I was a ****ager so I’m used to pain in the head and behind my eyes.

I did a have a b I t c h of a migraine that lasted nearly 3 days a couple of weeks ago though and this probably explains why.

A relative of a friend found out he’s got Motor Neurone Disease today which put my little issue in perspective 😩

I’ve lost two friends to MND......a truly hideous way to die.

Not good sorry to hear that, just watching someones muscles waste away is very difficult, but to the extent of MND would truly be horrific

Yes indeed, seeing someone with MND puts one’s own aches and pains in perspective; one of my oldest friends died of it last December, truly horrific.

I was diagnosed about 5/6 years ago. Referred to an Eye specialist via Specsavers and had both eyes lasered as previously mentioned by by Ketts. Luckily the person who did mine was very good and it took a few shots in each eye. Hardly felt anything to be honest and a few weeks later a re-examination by the specialist revealed the job was successful.

I would say the most frightening bit was when the optician said if I did not get the treatment done there was a possibility that going from a darkened space into a well lit place could cause the fluid in the eye to expand and the eye could rupture resulting in the loss of sight.

I doubt any optician would recommend treatment that was not necessary.

Had my eyes tested 7weeks ago and they are fine now, albeit my right eye had determinate marginally in the last four years. No hard sell this time but I have experienced the hard sell at Specsavers before but don’t give into it.

If you need the treatment there is no need to worry it really is not painful at all.
