It depends on whether he learns from his mistakes and there was a lot. To know whether he does learn means that he should not be sacked.
Having said that, he is twee and bordering on insignificant with his management style, coupled with fear in his heart judging by the style of football he produces.
The past is a judge of the future, and he does need to become more assertive and aggressive, because his emotional make up transfers onto the players, and will influence results.
Results are improving though, so no. The FA wont sack a manager who is essentially a diplomat, its what they want.
England have under performed for 50 years or so. Football is results based, so he needs to win the world cup next year. If he does not, he should be fired.
Second is nothing, England may as well have been knocked out in the first round as come second, this year. I dont like him, hes not my cup of tea, if i was chairman of the FA, i would be tempted to fire him but would not.
I would have a word with him about the world cup next year, along the lines of win it or else.
England are like Man United of the International world, and the expectation is to win, not come second.
I was surprised England made it as far as the final. On that basis he did well.
However, having reached the final and start as well as they did, to then sit back and hope that his overly defensive set-up could hold on to a 1-0 lead for almost 90 minutes was pretty inexcusable.
What Roberto Mancini achieved with an Italian squad that on paper, at least, looked inferior to several others (including England) was far more impressive.
Having said that, I don't think Southgate should be sacked. He just needs to change the English set-up.
What Frank said.
I wouldn't sack him, I'd keep him on as defensive coach or defensive director or something like that, but as head coach it's been proved in the last two tournaments he's lacking tactically in the attacking side of the game.
Watching England is not an enjoyable experience. We're such a negative side. We get everyone behind the ball and play to snatch something from a set piece with Kane and Sterling diving around to win free-kicks etc.
It's rudimentary and unarguably effective, but it's horrible watching the grind at this level. I much preferred watching Greenwood, Robson and Venables' England. It's true none of those managers ever reached a final but at least they failed with a bit of style and flair.
Anyway, with the host of attacking talent at his disposal there's no excuse to play two holding midfielders and seven defensive players overall. The similarities between the Croatia game and Sunday prove, beyond reasonable doubt a Leopard does not change its spots.
