West Brom Fan Jailed for 8 Weeks

The guy racially abused Sawyers and was sent to prison for eight weeks. Good - I hope this is an example now to anyone else who does this and even more disgusting aimed at one of our own players.

No sympathy whatsoever and sentences like this will deter other idiots.

I get it, racism is **** obviously
But why does this guy get 8 weeks but I know people who have been burgled and the burglar not get that
Or people beaten up and physically abused not get this

Is this guy a serial offender, or is this just for good press?

I’m sorry but I don’t think abusing a bloke who can easily live his life without taking notice warrants 8 weeks in prison, if kids can be bullied at school or youngsters can be mistreated in jobs and their perpetrators don’t get this

In fact I know for a fact racism and racial abuse at school, college or some jobs isn’t taken this seriously and obviously affects the people concerned far far more to the point they are afraid or scared to go about their usual routine

I don’t know enough about sentencing to know if 8 weeks is severe or not.

I also see he has to pay £500 costs but what did surprise me was he has to pay Romaine £500 compensation as well.

    Wonder how they calculate that?

I agree completely. Would this guy have got a prison sentence had a racially abused a regular guy on the street instead of a premier league footballer? I doubt it.

I think the way we punish people for these crimes is wrong. This guy should have been given the opportunity to go on a re-education or rehabilitation course first, as should anyone who does this. That is the way we beat it.

Not by banning them for life from the ground, or even prison sentences. I don't see how that fixes the problem and reduces it from happening in society.

Good post 123! In any context it's disgusting but racially abusing a school child or a lone female is a lot worse than a high profile footballer on 30 grand a week. Like you say had this guy racially abused lets say a school on social media he would have got his wrist slapped so the whole system is wrong!

I am sure Sawyers would not be anywhere near alarmed or distressed than a racially abused child or female so the system is all wrong!

Very good post BS. The guy was a complete idiot but for sure the Judge made an example of him. I agree there are much worse cases of racism in schools where it really could ruin a young child’s life more so than a grown up chap who earns more in a week than what most kids dream about in a year.

Would the sentence have been the same had this happened at a Sunday league match with many witnesses? No!! Rich footballers are protected that’s for sure! Some may say Jack Grealish should have got eight weeks in comparison for breaking Covid rules - getting totally drunk and then driving his car into other cars which could have killed someone. Which of the two incidents was worse?

Everything is totally inconsistent and down to a judge who probably should be playing croquet rather than passing sentence.

    Hope your well mate!

This sort of stuff needs a strong deterrent and if their making our scum fan an example of them I have no issue with this.

When I read his comment the first time I almost spat my tea out.......I’ve heard some strong stuff in my time but this one was right up there for me.

    Sawyers shouldn't have to read s h I t like that.

I don’t know what he wrote, tbh, and I don’t think anyone is defending this bloke or even saying he shouldn’t get 8 weeks, but it’s the fact that these footballs won’t be affected by this at all, when if this happens in places where people are affected on a day to day basis, the authorities would never act this swiftly or with so much press coverage

It’s a patting themselves on the back and be seen to be doing something exercise for me

Whilst what this so called Albion fan did is abhorant and I've no problem with a jail sentence, I am concerned at other serious offences that basically go unpunished, except for a 'slap on the wrist.' To my mind, those protesters who blocked a motorway stopping a son taking his mother to hospital and therefore making her stroke catastrophic should be severely punished. Too many crimes of violence are also not taken seriously enough or punished strongly enough. Let's be more consistent.

If I had a grandchild of mixed race who was being told they qualified for the “Baboon D’or” I’d want the perpetrator dealt with in the strongest possible way.

I actually thought the comment about Sawyers was the worst I had seen in a very long time, I actually winced when I saw it.

You’re never going to eradicate this sort of racist stuff unless you start dishing out some harsher sentences.

It should be applicable in cases of “normal” members of society though and not just reserved for stars.
