Sorry to hear if you lost your dog, it breaks you heart. Even though I've got another dog, we've had her 7 years now love her to bits. You still miss your old dogs, I slept on the floor with Lucy my Lassie dog for her last week.
I wasn't going to have another one and I come back from the Gateshead cup match and my unknown to me my wife had gone to Manchester to fetch me Bella . tHis was after 8 weeks.
I got another dog within 3 days of having our old dog put down. Its not a replacement such as changing your car etc. But I find if you get another dog especially a puppy straight away your mind and attention has to be focused on the new arrival and it helps you get over the loss of a really important part of your family. Give me a dog instead of people any day.
My eldest daughter has bought my granddaughter a sausage dog ( Chester😎 ) as an early Xmas present.
Their existing dog Harley is nearly 12 years old, a labradoodle and he’s been a wonderful dog, immediately bonded with the little one when she was born 5 years ago and very accepting of the new dog.
Harley is likely to be in his last 2 years of life and part of this decision to have Chester is to ensure there isn’t the same massive gulf when Harley passes.
A good strategy I think especially with a small child’s feelings to consider.
My cat Chloe is coming up to 15 years old, we lost Millie last year at 12 1/2.
Unfortunately Chloe is making it very apparent that a new addition isn’t going to happen on her watch 🤔🤣
So sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. As you say they are irreplaceable in as much as they become part of your family don't they. I'm quite soft when it comes to animals and got quite upset when a fox got in and killed all our chickens and ayelsbury/Peking ducks that we kept in the back garden. Some people couldn't understand that but we had had them for about 7 years and had hand reared them. Sadly lost my cali king snake about the same time-though she was about 21 so had a good innings. Currently we are down to our Boxer/Mastif cross and 4 cats. Growing up my Dad never really let us have pets which I always found strange because I found out that as a kid himself he always had all sorts and was particularly attached to a large German shepherd - turns out we never had any because he couldn't face the heart ache of losing them anymore. I sort of understand that but you know they only live so long and so I guess it's a balance of accepting that in exchange for how much they can enrich your life.
Sorry Ketts. Really hard thing, I look at my little boy every day and dread the day he goes. They are irreplaceable.
