Quite the quandary, I’m guessing Mr Goodwillie would rather be referred to as a rapist and lodged a complaint
It’s the irony of his surname that tickles me!
I’d worry less about being labelled as a racist or a r a p e I s t and spend my energy changing my surname.
Let's be honest here, most people who consider themselves to be English first are considered to be racist. I don't understand why, being proud to be English is no different than being proud of being Scottish, Welsh or Irish.
Wow didn’t expect this thread to take that turn
Many factors here colonialism, the press sensationalising things that no one really believes, the use of victimisation (both sides) and many other things that just tire me now if I’m honest
I just loved the perfect storm of rapist racist Goodwillie Badwillie
Class
Colonialism and empire weren't the sole preserve of the English, the Scots, Welsh and even the Irish were in it as well, so why are the English held as pariahs?
You can see it in any Hollywood film, the English are the baddies, the American's the goodies, (even though they still had slaves up to hundred and sixty years ago and still treat blacks and true Americans as second class citizens,) and everyone else is the downtrodden waiting to be saved by the heroic Americans from the nasty English.
So why can the Irish have a day's holiday on the p iss while the English have to go to work?
I respect everyone's culture and history, it's such a pity that others can't respect ours.
For all the evils of the empire, and there were many, America wouldn't have existed if not for the British and a lot of countries would have been more backward today.
Am I a racist? No. Am I proud of being English? Too bloody right I am.
The Irish were a colonial power?
Do tell....when?
Scots, Welsh empire builders?
When was this 55?
The British Empire, many Scots and Welsh and some Irish were part of it and enjoyed the riches it brought. But it's always the English who are seen as the masters, if that was the case why wasn't it called the English Empire? You can't have it both ways.
Look again at any film, there's one out now about a hurricane squadron, though it's a Polish hurricane squadron.
Zulu showed the heroic defence of Rorkes Drift by mainly welshmen, even though quite a few of the regiment was from Birmingham and the midlands. The most laughable of all was Brave heart. The only true thing about it was that it took place in Scotland. The battle of Stirling Bridge took place surprise surprise on a bridge not in a field. Edward Longshanks lived for quite a few years after Wallace.
Check out Last of the Mohicans, Rob Roy Titanic etc, always the same thing. The American's hate us, special partner my arse. They portray us as that little f ucker in Magnum, or Lord Leopold Plum Tree in Laurel and Hardy.
Any other race depicted in this was would cry stereotype.
I ask again, why are the English treated like Nazis? F uck me the Germans are thought more of these days.
Maybe they should have won the war or maybe we shouldn't have fought our cousin's.
A good job for some that the American's, Irish, Scots and Welsh did.
Wow, not even sure I can respond here
Surely this is a windup you think the English are treated worse than the Nazis
Love the cherry picking of stuff from movies spanning the best part of a 100 years
I think only an idiot would think that films are or reflect actual history hence the term artistic licence or based on actual events type of clauses that go with them
Do you think that black, Indian, Chinese, or other people get misrepresented in films?
I can’t think of any - I bet you can’t either
No one disagrees with your ability to be patriotic honestly, just enjoy your life mate, you’re at the top of the tree not the bottom.
Have a bit of empathy and chill out
We all have time to laugh at a Willie joke
What makes you say the Americans hate the English '55, having visited the states several times (admittedly some years ago now) I would say the opposite is true.
In my humble opinion it's down to stereotyping - Irish are considered to be welcoming, friendly and not taking life to seriously, they also have the traditional folk music. Welsh have much of that too, a little less welcoming perhaps, an extraordinary passion for rugby and the love of their country. Scots are a hardy bunch, there's the wild open spaces, distilleries and again the music features - a rich culture.
English are seen as marauding invaders behaving like idiots abroad causing trouble in football and being louts in holiday resorts, along with the elitist colonialism as portrayed down through the years in films. Tough one to shake off?
