Yes indeed, the book of his epic achievement leading the men to safety really is awe inspiring.
I still love stories such as this one.
I hope they can raise it and save it especially as I don’t think anybody went down with it so it’s not a gravesite..
I do find it hard to watch ships under water though, sends the shivers through me.
The story of Shackleton's determination to save his men and rescue them is unbelievable. The sea voyage he and a few men accomplished to get help for the men left on the ice is one of incredible grit and endeavour. I do not know who said it but there is a quote that says basically ''When you are in trouble and you have given up all hope get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton. A remarkable man.
I knew very little about Shackleton until about 20 years ago when my wife introduced him to her school's history curriculum. It was one of her favourite topics to teach. Led me to find out a lot more about this remarkable man. I think the full quote is "For a joint scientific and geographical piece of organization, give me Scott; for a winter journey, give me Wilson; for a dash to the Pole and nothing else, Amundsen; and if I am in the devil of a hole and want to get out of it, give me Shackleton every time."
PS. The kids loved the topic
Shackleton’s Boat Journey - Frank Worsley. I have read this book and recommend it to all. It was written in the 1930’s by the captain of Endurance. A very matter of fact style of writing. Incredible story.
