    Chezzie Match Ratings

Slocombe. 7. Looked solid for most of it and made a few good saves. Will be harsh if he’s dropped automatically for next match, but it is what it is.

Richardson. 7. Great player, just looks like the confidence is slowly being drained out of him being at Notts. You can see the speed etc…and that’s why I gave him a 7, but he’s not as confident as when he arrived.

Lacey. 5. Not good enough today I’m afraid. Sloppy mistakes led to undue pressure. Always rated him, but not today. Tbh, I would have subbed him at half time and gone to 4 at the back.

Rawlinson. 8 MoM. You get what you pay for. Solid, big and brutal. We’ve needed his aggression at the back. Not sure in a 3 helps him, but it is what it is. Loved to see him squaring up to players. Committed to the cause.

Chicksen. 7. Always looks the part. Calm and collected. Prefer him at lb or lwb, but he’s dependable to be open to a pass and to do his job well.

Kelly-Evans. 6. Love the enthusiasm, others seemed to think he was mom material today. Sorry. Didn’t see it. Can’t cross regularly enough.

Arter. 6. Composed and distributed well. Needs to up his fitness levels now so he can get more than 60 in. Will prove to be an astute signing, but not the hard man I was calling for.

Palmer. 7. Far and away, best Burchnall signing. Always there, always available, always trying to look forwards. Made a few mistakes, hence not mom, but did a decent job.

Vincent. 7. Put himself around the pitch well. Got involved with most things, but silly mistakes always tar his performance. I’d still pick him each week as hopefully he’ll improve and cut out the silliness.

Ruben R. 7. He’s not the striker we need. He’s a behind the striker kinda player. For me today, he was everywhere. Which is part of the issue. Dropping quite a way back, trying to run the ball through 5 guys to create the perfect opportunity. Just hit the thing man!

Wootton. 6. Lacking in confidence since January imo. Not in form striking wise at all. Some good hold up play and back to goal stuff etc…but he needs to put himself about more in their box. Force the issue.

JoB. 6. Open for a pass and a few good, neat touches. Not the most sensible challenges when defending! They should have had a penalty imo due to his faffing.

Francis. Not enough to do anything imo.

Burchnall. 6. The longer we go, the more I question the actual coaching. Same mistakes and same issues eg such as “create lots and the goals will come” well, we need them to come now mate. The team doesn’t have the killer instinct imo. Up front and across the pitch. Individuals do occasionally, but does the team set up to be hard and nasty? No.

    Slocombe - 7 - Absolutely fine.
Richardson - 5 - You’re a right back, mate. Do some right back stuff sometimes.
Rawlinson - 8 - Mad he was out of the team for months.
Lacey - 5 - Struggled, but can forgive him with the state he looked in at full time Tuesday.
    Chicksen - 7 - Just a consistent lad.
    Kelly-Evans - 7 - Doing a sound job out of position.
    Arter - 7 - Good player.
Palmer - 6 - If we’re playing Arter deep to ‘free Palmer up’, he has to offer more progressive stuff than that.
Vincent - 7 - Gives the ball away loads, fine, but we’re a better team with him on the pitch. Does stuff.
Rodrigues - 7 - Our best player, nightmare to pick up.
Wootton - 6 - Like him, does good stuff, but you’ve got to score that pal.

    He was picked as wing-back.
Ruben has nobody ahead of him to pick out as it is without wanting one of the only outlets to be more defensive in a home game when we're chasing wins for promotions.

The 3-0 Stockport loss and silly 'IB Out' calls might have spooked IB into going more defensive. The owners said they wanted attacking football so should reassure and encourage him, fans can't live on the memories of one extra blocked cross. 5-4-1 is no good for us.

To be fair that was a bloody hard game to select a MOM, because nobody in a Notts shirt was particularly good or bad. My ratings would all be between 6.5 and 6, with Rawlinson, Richardson, Ruben and DKE at the upper end.

I thought Rawlinson was clearly our best player today. He's a head it, kick it, strong-minded defender before he's anything else. We need at least one more big, rugged player like him, ideally in midfield, especially when we play streetwise teams like Chessie. If we don't win promotion this season the two key reasons will be not having enough Rawlinson types in the squad, in terms of physical stature and attitude, and the lack of a natural finisher. Incidentally I see Kristian Dennis won the game for Carlisle today, putting them pretty much safe in League Two.

Had to work yesterday so not there in person but both my lads said we were poor in first half lacked bite and let them " walk the ball in the net". We improved second half and were a little unlucky not to win but again Wooton missed an absolute gift. Sounds like same problems been all season. Shaky defence, no bite in midfield , no proven striker for this level. Fingers crossed once illness is sorted and with an easy on paper run in, we start to climb as there is no way this team will win 3 back to back away matches if we are in lower playoff places.

Was the defensive shaky yesterday? Chesterfield had the odd chance but they are 2nd in the table for a reason.

Lacey struggled first half but improves in the 2nd, Rawlinson was my MOM and Chicksen was as solid as ever.

Only see Notts on TV now so this was the first match I've seen since Dagenham at home.

Players who caught the eye for better or worse:

Rawlo: solid and pleasingly aggressive. Unlucky to be overlooked for most of the season as he does give us something we are missing. Not as accomplished as Cameron bringing the ball out but no mug with the ball at his feet either.

DKE: as above really. To quote Stall we are too much of a nice team and a couple of battlers don't do any harm.

Arter: was looking forward to seeing him, but surprised he was a little bit less composed and set piece delivery was worse than I expected.

Ruben: I still think he's our best player by a country mile. All action display, you can tell he really cares.

Richardson: first time I've seen him and again I expected much better. Has obvious characteristics that we can exploit like pace and strength, but seems to struggle with composure and decision making. If we can simplify his role (exploit his pace the same way Forest do with Spence - channel balls and one-twos for him to run on to) he could be a massive asset.

Wootton: Sigh. We know by now he's not a natural born predator, works hard but misses a lot of chances etc, but games like today really bring that home. We basically won that match 2-1, except we didn't.

Style of play: exactly what people on here have been moaning about really - some lovely passing, some crap defending where it seems like a Friday training game after the manager has told them to hold back on the tackles.

I reckon we're still a good all-round striker and a couple more hairy-arsed battlers away from promotion.

I don’t think those hairy arses are going to appear over the horizon any time soon, so let’s concentrate on who we’ve got.
We might have a better all round striker sitting on the bench though, one with a goals per minute record that is at a different level

Agree with Elite, pretty kirsch average and same scores across the board expect Wootton gets 2 points knocked off for that miss. All the good hold up play in the world doesn't negate the fact our top striker regularly misses easy chances especially the header yesterday, in tight games of that magnitude then that miss from your number 9 is pretty soul destroying. Happens too often.
