But now they are all working together on something that is absolutely fascinating. DARPA is the leader of this but it needs other expertise in order to get the job done. Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin is also signed up to it.

It is about a future nuclear powered spacecraft, eventually crewed, initially used between Earth and the Moon, later to Mars and the ambition is to go much further, maybe to the edge of the Solar System.

What Lockheed Martin does that is out in the open is interesting enough. But its 'Skunkworks' division develops very advanced craft in a Top Secret environment. In 1995 when the Head Of Lockheed Martin's 'Skunkworks' retired he said "We already have what it takes to get ET back home".

The space craft that visited Pluto recently flew past Pluto and into open space beyond because it had no brakes, its ability to observe Pluto only lasted a few hours.
There is no mention of a braking system, that a craft going even faster, even the speed of a speeding bullet, will need brakes. Air brakes wont work in a vacuum.
There is no air. Can the engine be reversed? What guiding system is there? Are there little engines that can manouvre it?, that respond to a steering wheel.
How long will it take to speed up and slow down?, a miscalculation on a trip to the moon may result in the craft going past the moon faster than Cambridge leaving Carlisle United behind.
Can you get Star Radio on the radio?
Gravity fields are surely what slows down craft, or changes their courses in the slingshot effect. Crashing into summat would also work well.
The first craft that uses this power system is going to be small and unmanned just to prove that this innovation works. This will be in 2026. The overall concept is for fast manned craft to be used between Earth and the Moon for a while, then to Mars, eventually to as far as is practical in our Solar System. I take it for granted that with the eventual intention of sending crewed craft a very long way very quickly DARPA, Lockheed Martin, NASA and Blue Origin have considered all aspects of manoeuvrability, including travelling quickly and then braking.
We are not going to be told about that which is very new and well in advance of current technology. Nearly all that DARPA does is Top Secret at the time of its creation. Lockheed Martin's 'Skunkworks' is Top Secret. Some Of NASA's and Blue Origin's work is Top Secret.
