The scammers are targeting a new source. With all the cost of living Govt/ Energy Firm schemes, initiatives, grants, refunds etc the scammers are pretending to be from a Govt Dept, Local Authority, Energy Firm etc seeking to "verify your details" before they supposedly pay money into your bank account. You know the rest.
I had a text this morning supposedly from HMRC saying they were having difficulty paying me a cost of living tax refund and they needed to check whether my bank details were correct.
Please reinforce the message to any vunerable/ elderly relatives or friends you know that these are scams. The barstewards (the scammers, not your relatives.

If you get an e mail from a Nigerian Prince wanting £1000 admin fee to release your lottery winnings from a game you never entered that is likely to be genuine.
If you get an e mail from someone claiming to be your energy provider saying your direct debit has gone up 80% that is likely to be a scam.
