Still a long way to go, we must aim to finish in fifth. I think Leicester will win the league with either Southampton or Leeds in second. So, if that were the case and we were fifth, we would most likely be playing either Southampton or Leeds in the playoff final if we beat Ipswich again in the semis. Bring it on!
Two key matches - particularly Hull methinks !
Carlos does seem to prefer to keep players with the potential to ‘change the game’ on the bench rather than start with them. Perhaps also he has some plans to manage to rotate to address the rush of fixtures ?
I agree buddy, I would, maybe naively, like to see all the above 3 start.
Hull look very good at present and Plymouth are strong at home, any points from these 2 away games is going to be tough.
I think we’ll be fine. In Corberan we trust. The Southampton game was one game that we thought was strange subs wise. He’s not going to lose his marbles now.
The Saints game showed us the difference in quality between ourselves and the likes of them, Leics and Leeds and a reminder to us (if it was ever needed!) that should we manage to gain promotion that we are going to need a lot of decent recruitment and the money to do so. Tbh, part of me would prefer us to remain in the Championship for another season in order to enable a better top to bottom rebuild which -hopefully-our new owner may enable. The extra money from promotion would certainly be good but don't think watching us on MOTD would be too enjoyable!
A look at the table shows just how tight the Championship remains and just how important all our upcoming games are if we are to remain in a play off position but I still believe-for all our short comings and injuries-that we have the beating of any of these other teams. We just need consistency. There are certainly some tough games ahead but it isn't beyond us.
My own feelings about the squad are that, in terms of attacking options, the recent acquisitions, alongside the continued development of Fellows will all help. Fellows, Johnston and Wallace are all more direct players and Weimann has proven he can be clinical in front of goal. Whilst the last cannot be said of Asante, I still believe that he has a role to play as he can cause defences problems and without the pressure of being a lone striker may be more effective. Let's hope Marshall proves a useful addition too.
Midfield wise, Mowatt is generally solid, Yokuslu sometimes excellent and Chalobah beginning to prove his worth. As an attacking midfielder, I don't know how much opportunity Diangana will now get. He certainly has ability but is not consistent over 90 minutes and still too lightweight when it comes to stronger opposition. Still a decent option to have though I'd argue. Swift has been generally poor since returning from injury and as for Reach, like many, I cannot see what Corberan sees in him.
Defensively, both Kipre and Bartley have been generally solid and Kipre is certainly one player we need to hang on to. Bartley is getting slower as age works against him and his injury is a worry but we do have Ajayi as an option. Pieters has experience but don't particularly rate him. With a good goal keeper in Palmer, I'd argue that our biggest concerns defensively are Furlong and Townsend. Both are good going forward, Furlong being particularly effective when doing so, but are too often caught out in their defensive duties.
This is certainly not a squad that will do well in the Premiership -but it remains one that could get us back into it. Corberan (despite some questionable changes on Friday !) can only be praised for what he has achieved with this group of players and, so far, his loan acquisitions have proven valuable.
Well I am more optimistic...I expect at least seven points from these two games...at least.
