    O/T Saturday Jobs

As a kid did you use to have a Saturday job during your school holidays?

I worked at Hickinbottoms of Wednesbury helping the driver on the bread round delivering bread cakes etc to houses in the days when we used to have a bread mon. Used to get up at 3am every Saturday, walk from West brom to Wednesbury as a 14yr old in the dead of night.

I'd be there so early that I would even load his bread van for him before he arrived, flippin hard work and all for £1.50

I had a Saturday job working for Foster Brothers on Soho Road. I sold school uniform, vests, pants, socks even suits for kids. I was not allowed to sell adult suits. Pound, shillings and pence and you had to add it up in your head,(no calculators) and get it right every time. Stick the money and order in a Lamson tube and send it up a pipe into the cashiers office and wait for the change and receipt to come back to you via the same method. 9am until 6pm for 15 shillings. Kids today don't know they are born.

No. Had a paper round for a while but that wasn't just for the holidays and certainly not specific to Saturdays.

I was far too busy playing football, climbing trees and generally enjoying being outdoors whenever the opportunity arose during school holidays.

Anything to get out of the house (for a variety of reasons) basically. Just like during term time I suppose in that regard. Could barely sit still when I was younger in fairness.

    I never had a part time job, I was far too lazy as a t e e n ager.

My dad’s nickname for me was “blister” due to the fact I only appeared after any hard task had been completed.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that a lot of lads I’ve known who had paper rounds have done really well for themselves, most are self employed.

My paper boy from the late 90’s and very early 2000’s is actually now my financial adviser and owns his own practice.

He reminds me that I used to constantly remind him to get off his bike to get to our front door rather than squeeze between the cars and risk scratching them!🤣

Our relationship has gone from that to him now telling me that I’m best suited doing this or that in regards to business and money.

I love to see that kind of dynamic where a kid shows an early work ethic and then goes on to do really well and ends up doing well in life.

I don’t mind lazy kids and t e e n s as long as they wise up at the right time.

Youngsters do need to be able to enjoy their first 16 to 17 years without too much “grown up” stuff to endure, there’s a lifetime of that ahead.

No. Didn’t have parents to be interested enough in my development.

I worked at Linfood cash & carry in Saltley (got taken over by Booker) from 15.5 yrs to finishing A-levels - every Sat & Sun morning throughout that time, never had a lie-in. Met some cracking lads from Castle Bromwich and am still in touch with them.
