    Penalties

I would like to hear what people think about the ‘quality’ of penalties we have seen. Despite the flying saves I was not impressed very much by those in the Portugal v Slovakia game. However last night I thought that there was some real quality ie giving the keeper little or no hope.

The issue I have with penalties is that concerning the way Ronaldo took his; I maintain that it should be disallowed. I know that I bang on about this but the law always used to be that stopping in the run up would invalidate the spot kick. Is that law still in place? If it is, then the match officials are failing badly in their application. If not, when was that particular law changed? I would have loved it if that Ronaldo penalty had been disallowed, although there may have been a subsequent issue with his floods of tears water logging the pitch. The penalty taker already has an advantage over the goalkeeper for a penalty kick, so trying to employ gamesmanship to increase that advantage should be stopped.

Agree about the stuttering run up. I have always preferred Bomber’s style of execution and that of the bloke who used to play for West Ham many moons ago.

Yes the pens in Portugal vs France were top class, comes down to practice I guess - I too hate this fannying around with the run-up.

Players may stutter in their run up but they don’t actually stop so by definition they are still in forward motion, this is why it’s allowed.

I’m all for it, it’s quite a skill to master.

It’s much easier to take a conventional penalty than to take a stutter penalty in my experience.

I took two competitive penalties in my playing days and scored both in the conventional way and wouldn’t have had the technique to stutter.

But didn’t Ronaldo completely stop mid approach? Maybe it is lawful but it doesn’t seem right.

Ronaldo did actually stop in his run up, I still maintain that it should have been disallowed.

We look good on pens these days but I wouldn’t want it to go past the first 7 takers.
