    Matchday thread : Derby v Caerdydd Sept 14th 2024

I know it's over a week away but I've been following a thread elsewhere wherein people are saying, not without justification, that those who started against Bristol deserve to start against Caerdydd because of how well the team played.

As good a victory as the Bristol game was, as I put in my match report, let's not go overboard. A well crafted win but we shouldn't forget that we could have been a goal or 2 behind in the opening 25 minutes. Better sides would have got a goal. There's at least half a dozen sides in this League who would paste us 9 times out of 10 if we allow them 70% possession, much of it in our half, in the opening 20 minutes of a game. We need to find ways of preventing that. That's the challenge PW and the squad have. To be able to play off the front foot, from the off and for much of the game.

Cardiff are bottom. They are likely to see parking the bus from the off and hoping to nick a goal on the odd counter as their best way of getting something out of the game. That means we'll have to do the attacking, we'll have to make the play. Have we ever been good at breaking down massed defences?

That's why we might see some changes in the starting XI, despite how good we countered against Brizzle. It will be a different tactical challenge requiring different solutions so it's far from certain that PW won't be making changes.

What's your stance on this? Keep the same starting XI because of how the Brizzle game went or make changes because Caerdydd are a different kettle of fish and will present a completely different challenge which requires totally different solutions?

If the tagged are going to park the bus, the we don't need two DM's and could bring in a more creative player in place of Adams. The Ipswich loanee perchance.

No sure how to fit the third CB in without rejigging the midfield 5 though

Bit of a bogey team, think we’ve won just four of our last 20 fixtures against them. Maybe we’ll benefit from some insider information from Phillips and Adams.
Our home form has been good. Perhaps best to wait and see who’s available after the international break but I’m a bit nervous about this one…1-1 subject to availability/selection.

9-0 to the Superrams. Six for Yates bringing cheer to his Swansea masters....and a 92nd minute penalty for Zetterstrom adding the icing

This could be a snore fest. We've had the mouse's share of possession thus far and play on the counter. They have just 1 point form their opening 4 games. That point came from their Derby game against Swansea, a fixture where form goes out the window. They appear to have had some good periods in a couple of their games, all to no effect. If we set up to counter and they come to park the bus then there will be nobody in PP or on RamsTV suffering from insomnia this Saturday.

I have some great memories of watching the Rams at Ninian Park, always liked going their and Vetch Field (Swansea) and a certain Alan Durban came from Cardiff and Eddie Thomas (going back to the early sixties now) from Swansea.
Still early in the season and form is difficult to assess, a bit more 'Port Talbot Steel' in the middle to tighten us up early doors won't go amiss. We need to get something from an away match ASAP so a 1- 0 win will do nicely!

Anyone going beware the speed cameras, they love 'em in S Wale's!

All very sound advice Mac but if any Ram fan is in South Wales on the day, they will miss the game
