    Rachel Reeves

Surely that’s a good click bait for Mick to respond to.

Anyway, while the dust has sort of settled since Wednesday. What’s everyone’s thoughts?
I personally think we are taxed too high on everything and this is covering the mismanagement of previous governments.
The problem with these rises is that they don’t really say how long it will be for or give any hope that taxes will fall back down? Unless i’ve missed it.

Come on Mick, give us your views.

I just wish that she had been honest and not hidden behind words. ‘I won’t tax the working man.’ What the devil does that mean? Aren’t small business owners working men and women. In fact they probably work harder than most to keep their businesses afloat and they have been hammered. In my opinion it will prove to be counter productive. All these initiatives that they propose are commendable but where is the money coming from? Borrowing again! This is the mess that the Tories had to sort out after the previous Labour government.

Let’s be perfectly clear about this. It’s no good Labour claiming that the pandemic is an excuse for mismanagement. The pandemic was the biggest financial problem since the Second World War and on top of that we have the war in Ukraine. How would Labour have dealt with it?

I’m not claiming that the Tories were perfect, far from it. However, I don’t think that their policies were all wrong but it was too much sleaze, infighting and individuals that were the main problem. The Labour Party state that they want to bring honesty and integrity back into politics, I don’t think that there has been too much honesty in this budget.

Agree with everything said here. Only time will tell how effective these policy decisions are. One thing we don’t have or have ever had is some huge contingency fund/plans. I feel the UK is a poorer place after continuous economic decline because we have not built robust enough systems/practices - that can last to generate benefits for the longer term and that can also be sustained over time. Yet we pay so much money in wages within the nhs and other civil services - pay them for the sake of paying them rather delivering key outputs 😂

Seemed like a sensible budget to me albeit I can see how business owners have had the brunt of it. Suppose the money had to come from somewhere.

I agree with the inheritance tax changes. I’m not one for inheritance; should a progressive society have people living pretty on parents or grandparents successes? Not for me.

It’s a Labour government, what do you expect, something good?

Well the inheritance tax on land will seriously affect farmers, the rise in the state pension just about offsets the lost winter fuel allowance, the rise in employers NI and minimum wage will increase unemployment as many small businesses cannot take the additional costs. Much of the money for the NHS has already been allocated, and yet again no changes in the low or high rate income tax thresholds - not much joy to be had is there.

The wealthy investors are taking their cash out of the UK to invest elsewhere according to some, not what you want to hear when growth is needed.

All swings and roundabouts though WCV. There isn't an intervention that doesn't cause some sort of negative reaction to something else. They tend to calculate elasticity and try to work out the point that they can tax where the tax returns outweigh the negative impact.

We were never 'getting anything' out of this budget. It was all about raising revenue to fund crumbling public services, which for me was essential.

That budget makes me wonder whether the government really has the faintest idea what they are doing. I am no expert but there are going to be some severe fallouts from this. Of particular concern is the care system, which has been struggling for years and now faces a considerable increase in costs. The care system looks after some of the most vulnerable people in our country and this budget must make the providers wonder why they bother. Labour has, of course, made sure that their greedy mates in the unions are well looked after with big pay rises for many who were already well paid. However, the most vulnerable, who rely on the care system appear to be ignored. The government will, of course, continue to shell out millions of pounds each day to care for illegal arrivals on our shores. I know it’s not quite that simple but surely our vulnerable elderly people should take priority? I dread to think what state the country will be in come the end of this government’s term in office.

    How about cutting the spending?

Every government makes choices - I think this one has made bad ones- you cannot get growth through increased taxation. Bu how about a root and branch review of spending as a way out. There is so much posturing as a world power- we are not. There is so muchspending on woke issues and immigration costs. The list of government spending is mind boggling and I believe we could get a democratic majority ro cut, reduce or abolish spending.

Have a look at Charlotte Gill's and tell me there are not huge savings to be made without compromising essential services
