    Lascelles

    One year contract extension.

He's obviously important to Eddie and to the players (look at how Bruno and Tripps waited for him to come and lift the Cup with them) so, on balance, this is a good thing, no?

I don't understand why we'd extend the contract if we are going after another right footed CB.

Either we're extending so we can focus this summer's transfer budget on other positions or it's been extended so that we'll even get a nominal transfer fee for him rather than seeing him walk away on a free transfer.

Could it be so we can sell him and not just let him go for free
Maybe he feels he owes the club something

That would make the most sense. Get a nominal fee for him

That does make sense. With nowt left on the contact and coming back from injury he's worth nothing.

But with recovery and fit with a few games under the belt we'll get a few bob for him in the windows from the next winter one.

I think it is that but I think also he offers a lot around the club and behind the scenes which Eddie and the other players clearly value.

We're still going to go for the younger RCB I think, regardless of Lascelles staying.

Very true Jammy. He's been a good servant to the club and a valuable squad member despite the time he's lost through injury and taking into consideration he's not been a first choice starter for a couple of seasons.

He's always been there backing the squad whether in or out of the team which emphasises the overall squad spirit.

Absolutely understand the need to keep seasoned pros around the squad but when we're talking about a 23-25 man squad we need all the spots open to players who are actually gonna play.

Agree with that but it?ll take time to fill all the places with better players than him and Lascelles has been given just one more year.

Surely at this point with BDB being an absolute leader & a Geordie to boot, plus Schar a consummate professional and favourite of every mum on Tyneside signing a new contract we've got leaders with bags of experience?

I get it he's a great lad, he's a captain who has been with us through thick and a hell of a lot of thin but sentimentality needs to be set aside to progress to the top top levels.

We'll see. I don't mind if he does hang around, great bloke but I would applaud him out the door should he look for a few project at his time of life.
