The UK used to believe in the saying " I fundamentally disapprove of what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it" or words to that effect. The saying has been attributed to a number of people but basically promoted free speech and was totally against censorship of any sort. I remember back in the 1960s at school being 'forced' to take part in debates although I didn't like speaking out in public myself. Even for a school environment the subjects were adult and could be controversial. The gist of the thing, though, was you drew your side of the arguments by lots or were assigned a side by the teacher and had to prepare a suitable argument even although you were totally against, personally, the views you put forward. I vaguely remember debates on the Vietnam War, the Death Penalty etc. Censorship, woke views, non platforming and the nonsense views of the left and much of the young population now has rendered debating, even the 'mighty' Oxford Union, a lost art. You are not allowed an opinion on some matters; you have to go along with modern 'groupthink'.
The worst of the lot of it is the permanent state of 'offended' that many seem to get into about all sorts of things all the time especially those who get offended on other folks' behalf. It's one thing a party being offended about something directed specifically at them and although much of it is nonsensical woke ideology there are certain slurs and sayings that are well out of order and can realistically upset people but it is the third parties with no connection to the remarks who get offended by proxy that I can't understand or take.
The world, specifically, the UK is indeed 'going to hell in a handcart'. Free speech is dead and police are acting of behalf of the censors, woke loons, assorted nutters etc. without the backing of any laws to support them. Back to the phrase 'fundamentally disagree ', I fundamentally disagree with a lot, maybe most, of Trump's policies over in America but his war on woke (and his stance on illegal immigration) I fundamentally AGREE with.
Rant over (for the moment at least).
Been about half a dozen prominent right wing you tubers and comedians arrested and some charged over hurty words last few weeks.
Despite Starmer claiming free speech is alive and well in this country it certainly is not.
They are trying to ban any thought right of Corbyn in this country.
Remember Hopkins was due to appear at Whitehall theatre, I had tickets for the show and some wee fud at the courier decided to start a campaign to get her banned ....it worked.
I phoned and got thru to ask the courier editor what gave his journalist the right to decide who appeared at the Whitehall.
His stance "we don't want this kind of thing in Dundee and Andrew had every right to stop it"
And that's an editor of the so called free press.
Oh and he wouldn't or couldn't specify what "that kind of thing" was.
You never see such shutting down of opinions on the right.
So many politicians and the police think they have the high moral ground......they don't or they wouldn't need to resort to slurs, labelling and arrests.
Guys like Dab Flynn are so out of touch it beggars belief but thinks he speaks for the majority
What was now labelled as conspiracy theory re free speech is right oot in the open now.
Anybody whose even slightly media savvy can see it
We need to utterly crush the left, simple.
