    50 years ago today....

I was bobbing up and down on a rusty old Destroyer on Beira Patrol. We kept in touch via the World Service commentary and we were pretty chuffed when England won the World Cup. Even more happier that we were due in Mombasa a few days later for a few days run ashore but that's another story. I didn't see the win therefore and don't expect to see England win a football competition in my life time. I'd settle for PFC promotion this season right now but nevertheless I will have a wee dram tonight in memory of Sir Alf, Moore, Bally and co.

My mate and I were in his garage rebuilding a 1939 MG, we came in and watched the last ten minutes of the Final with his Mum and Dad. I was more interested in old cars than England football back then.
    Still am actually

I watched the first half from a set in the Rediffusion shop window in Ryde High Street. What I am trying to find out is why was I not rowing in a Hants and Dorset Rowing Association regatta on a Saturday afternoon in the middle of summer. Damned sure they wouldn't have cancelled an event it would have taken a year to prepare for so can only guess I skived off on that day.

Off topic I know but those were the days when you could sign and pay up with Radio Rentals in the morning and have a TV installed in the afternoon.

Only trouble was it was four foot across with a three inch screen and caught fire if you left it on for longer than an hour. I think we were the last family in the Western hemisphere to have a rented black and white tv.

Can recall the neighbours having us in to watch the Coronation. Very boring for me that. My old man bought an Echo TV around 1956 I'd say, I used to love the Six Five Special (1957 it started I googled it).

I was on the Mall for the Coronation so didn't see the full ceremony.
I do recall though that my first TV experience was watching an episode of Little Red Monkey early 1953........I had to hide behind the sofa AIR.....the signature tune still gives me goose bumps when I think of it.
