O/T - Old and new comedy shows

Yo Millers, this is off topic so if you want something different and funny, and not about depressing football, then maybe this isnt the thread for you after all

Have you all noticed that the jolly old Bbc are re-making or re-hashing loads of old comedies at the moment, for whatever reason. (I dont know what we pay our telly license for but sometimes they do come up with something worth watching.)
They have already shown new episodes of Porridge & Are you being served, and are about to show new episodes of Hanc*ock's half hour, Steptoe and son, and In sickness and in health. And they have also updated Goodnight sweetheart and pre-dated Keeping up appearences!

In the long run, Im guessing right now that they will be met with mostly poor viewing figures and critical comments. Somethings are best left untouched.

I read it was something to do with 60 years of sitcom (or something like that) and they will consider making more of any that get good ratings/reviews. Apparently Porridge did, Are You Being Served did not. That could possibly be due to the fact that they were good and crap respectively in the first place.

What bit did you edit in my original post CA ?
Anyway, I agree that because I didnt like something originally then I wont watch it again even when its re-made about 40 years on.
Ronnie Barker made Porridge so likeable of course because of his 'Fletch' character, and I did make the effort to watch the new one recently. It showed some promise, but not much if Im honest.
And along the same lines I liked him and David Jason in Open all hours, so I was worried at first when they re-hashed the show as Still open all hours, but I genuinely thought that that show worked well because of the new characters.

I watched the 'updated'version of Open all hours, it was rubbish. So now you've depressed me more with this thread

Somethings are better being left to the original

I watched Are you being served and Porridge. AYBS was crap, but I agree it was crap originally.

Porridge wasn't too bad but nowhere near as funny as the original. But how could it be. Ronnie Barker was a comedy genius and was backed up by some really funny actors too. There isn't this kind of talent anymore.

I really wish they weren't re-doing Steptoe and Son. This is one of if not "the" favourite comedy show of mine and Wilfred and Harry were both fantastic actors, again that sort of talent just isn't there these days.

How the hell can they re-do In sickness and in Health. What made that so funny was the the things Alf Garnet used to say about all walks of life. The do good brigade would never let that happen today.

Some things are best left alone.

I've seen them all, Are You Being Served was awful, Young Hyacinth unfunny and Til Death Do Us Part was poor as well, the guy playing Alf seemed constantly on the verge of tears.

Goodnight Sweetheart was pretty good (and enraged the SJWs because the studio audience laughed at a gay couple kissing) and Porridge was okay too thanks to Kevin Bishop, Steptoe and Hancock to come, hancock has been the best reviewed.

Goodnight Sweetheart and Porridge would be the ones worth making a new series of I think.

I thought Rock and chips (the early version of Only fools) was poor and these prequels just never seem to work. And the early version of Keeping up appearances was absolute garbage.
I havent seen In sickness and in health yet, and to be honest Im not expecting much from it or Steptoe either. Hanc*ock doesnt interest me at all to be honest.
