Wouldn't change much, Archer in for Anderson is an obvious one for me. I'd keep Ali in the side, his form will return, it's just confidence. I'd change the batting order - swap Butler with Ali, and Stokes with Bairstow.

Lords traditionally isn't really legspin friendly, so Rashid could be an expensive luxury - leaves Bess or Leach as options to Ali. Alii's batting isn't the issue - at number 8 he's a spinner who can bat a bit as a bonus. Question is, is he our best off spinner? Lyon made the ball talk, Ali raised but a few whispers in contrast.
To pick Ali on the strength of his batting in the past is very negative and speaks of a lack of confidence in the top 7 (perhaps rightly, given the lack of form) so I'd pick the best spinner, although I'm not entirely sure who that is, or maybe even 5 seamers and Root if it's that sort of wicket.
Burns, Roy, Bairstow, Root, Stokes, Pope (if fit) or Foakes, Buttler, Woakes, Curran S, Archer, Broad
We turned up at Edgbaston with at least two players totally bereft of form (Ali and Bairstow), two trying to convert (not very well) their white ball international form to red ball (Roy and Butler) and two who are newish to test cricket (Denly and Burns)! Then we lost Anderson! So, even though Burns did well, perhaps it's not surprising that the Aussie's were able to eventually duff us up!!
... to ashes, dust to dust![]()
They won the first Test in 2005...then look what happened. 1 down...4 to go...everything to play for and the Aussies aren’t that special.
The i correspondent suggesting Dominic Sibley as an opener, Roy further down the order and Jack Leach as the best available spin bowler.
A middle order of Roy, Buttler, Stokes, Bairstow and maybe Ali? GreT if we get off to a solid start, but its an aggressive line up after a staid first 3
As predicted by most...Leach for Mo, Archer for Anderson and - hopefully imo - Sam Curran for Denly.
