We were taught [when I was at school] about William Wilberforce & that he was responsible for the abolition of the slave trade which I totally accept, but sadly that's where the teaching stopped
I was never taught how our Empire was built on the proceeds of the trade
WD & HO Wills,Tate & Lyle & many other examples I've learned since were prime examples
I am not advocating that such examples be expunged from the record [if they were ever there on obvious view] but not to even be told about them does not allow for the student [for that is where our minds are developed] to make up their own minds after being put in possession of the facts
That will trump all the statues arguments
