Italy's 1982 World Cup hero Paolo Rossi has died aged 64, his family says.

Rossi became a household name after leading the Azzurri to victory at the tournament in Spain, finishing as top scorer and being named best player.

At club level he first came to prominence as a prolific scorer for Vicenza, earning a move to Juventus and later playing for AC Milan.

His death was announced on Thursday, following what Italian media report had been a long illness.

Rossi's wife Federica Cappelletti posted a picture of them together on social media with the words "Per sempre" ("forever").

She did not disclose the cause of his death.

Rossi scored 20 goals in 48 appearances for the Italian national side, and more than 100 Serie A goals during spells with Vicenza, Perugia, Juventus, Milan and Verona.

"Sometimes there are simply no words to express the pain we are all experiencing," said a statement from Vicenza, who Rossi helped win promotion to Serie A in 1977.

Following his performances at the 1982 World Cup, he was awarded the Ballon d'Or which at the time was given to the European footballer of the year.

After retiring from football in the late 1980s, Rossi worked as a pundit for Sky, Mediaset and Rai.

    R.I.P. Paulo Rossi

This was the first World Cup I took an interest as a 10 year old. He was the first superstar I came across and was mesmerised by him during that tournament. Spent the rest of the summer pretending I was him when scoring goals playing footy.

    Legend....

I was working abroad in 1982. I had no tv and struggled to see games, usually catching glimpses in bars albeit in a foreign language.

Images of Rossi lit up my summer. RIP Paulo Rossi, thanks for the memories.

The 1982 World Cup was where I finally realised I am working class. Watching a game (England v W Germany maybe) on the 14" B&W TV we had in the student house I shared with 3 girls. It was towards the end of term and the parents of one of the girls showed up to take her home for the summer. Her Dad, a renowned heart surgeon promptly walked into the living room and turned off the TV saying something like "We don't watch TV do we when we have company?". Now I know that's exactly what my parents had taught me but the World Cup for goodness sake? I wouldn't turn that off even if Goldie Hawn had shown up naked....well maybe I would have made an exception!

On the topic of switching off TVs

I was on a training course at RMCS Shrivenham, housed in the officers hall of residence and mess.

They had three rooms each with a tv. One showing BBC 1, the next BBC2 and the third ITV. If you wanted to watch another program you switched rooms, even if you were the only person in the room it wasn’t permitted to change the channel ( probably a court martial offence)
