Forget the statistics, facts and figures.

As usual , after every game that’s played, some people appear to have great delight in laying down the statistics from the game we just watched. After tonight’s game ,it appears that the statistics were heavily in favour of the Villa. Who cares ? I don’t. Maybe some of you do. The history books in years to come, won’t tell you that Villa had 28 shots, or that the Clarets had 40’/. Possession. What it will tell you is that 5he game ended nil nil. From a Clarets point of view, that’s all that matters. The game is being dissected far too much by the so called tv media experts, when there is no need to do so. They only continue to go over the same old ground. We know what sort of a game we’ve seen. We also know the full time score. That’s all that matters , isn’t it ?

Like you Mal I don't take any notice of statistics, Passes 425 ? big deal if 325 were in your own half, possession again means nothing, if we were penned in for 90 minutes yes it would be dire, also shots on/off target means nowt, if we go the whole game without a shot I'll not be pleased but don't look at the opponents stats just how my/our team performed, stats IMO are for Anoraks.

Lol guilty as charged. Clearly the one that matters is the result, Nick enjoys clean sheets, the strikers won’t like no goals.
Our new owners are going to be using stats to identify target players, will be fun to see what they choose.
Goals per game - best player is Benson. Plus Aubamayang lol

Totally agree with you both, the only statistics that counts is how many goals you score and how many goals you conceded.
With the exception of the Manchester City and Chelsea games we have not conceded too many goals. Our problem is we are not scoring enough goals.

Agree but why are we not, is the question that stats can help show clubs the things the eye doesn’t pick up. That’s why all the players wear GPS so their every movement is tracked, every touch and tackle analysed. It costs lots of money for the level of detail available and that can sometimes cost a player their place.
I was surprised how Good Brownhills stats were for example.

More stats the merrier for me, the score is a stat, the number of points is a stat, the number of goals scored is a stat, the number of sitters Chris Wood has missed is a stat, number of clean sheets is a stat, number of England caps Pope has is a stat, % of possesion is a stat, number of yellow cards a player has is a stat, and quite an important one. Where do you draw the line.

We can all have a different opinion on the performance of the team and players, everything else is a stat.

    .

if you watch a game (a team)....I guess you just know, then the next game, and the next...you can work it out, find the weak from the strong, but we don't watch every game of every team...so having stats to peek at gives us (me anyway) some idea of their state of play, the more important if it regular....As for us tonight, I watched the game, so have My idea of what went on - Villa will be scratching their heads at how they didn't give us a drubbing - and as for us....

While there is something in what you say OC, but all the technology in the world is no good if it is ignored or misinterpreted.
I don’t see what happens in training or see the results of the technology, what I do see is we are not taking the few chances we create match after match. While our defence is constantly under pressure and in general is performing well as a unit.

PL stats tell you quite a lot and allow for game by game comparisons and monitoring trends, even predictions. However they are only a monitoring tool, to draw attention to excellence or poor performance.
Lots of other factors come into play as you suggest.

Stats do help managers answer questions in sport health or business like How well do your players doctors, staff perform, that without numbers are impossible to answer with any confidence.

What the stats clearly show is if we don't start scoring goals we are going to be relegated.

If we sell Tarkowski straight after Christmas ditto.

Wood's stats clearly show Vydra must get his chance.

Does SD pay any attention to the stats? I'm not at all certain he does.
