It was worth making the almost 650 mile round trip to catch my favourite all time band, on the “ Last Domino” farewell tour. Despite the negative publicity surrounding what Phil Collins could and could not do, it was an amazing show which was spread over 2 and a half hours in the antiquated Utilita Arena. ( apparently, a new arena is being built) Ably backed by Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks , plus longtime band member Daryl Steurmer, they rattled off a succession of songs that we all came to hear. Phil Collins son, Nicholas, proved an adequate replacement for his father on the drums, and you could not tell the difference. The 10000 Geordies lapped it up, and it was a fitting finale to a great bands musical journey. To think I thought their music was a load of rubbish when I first heard of them in the late 60’s ! I was also pleased they included material from the Peter Gabriel era. It showed a mark of respect for someone who was part of the way the group evolved . I wasn’t sad as left the arena at the end of tyne evening, just glad I had the opportunity of bidding farewell to one of the greatest bands of all time.

Was Steve Hackett playing? His father in law is a mate of mine and Steve came round to ours for tea and jammed with one of my lads a few years back - top bloke.
No he wasn’t. Apparently he was offered the opportunity to link up with the band, but is also on tour right now, doing the full version of Genesis live album “ Seconds Out” ; plus his own material. A very accomplished musician. His band were here in Cardiff a couple of weeks ago, but I couldn’t get there, as I was on holiday in West Wales.
Great group, love Reading about your musical trips Mal,keep em coming.
I was lucky enough to see Genesis on their “Foxtrot” tour in the 70’s. Peter Gabriel finishing “Supper’s Ready” in his wife’s red dress and fox’s head. Even with the primitive (by today’s standards) sound systems, they were awesome. I have never heard or seen a guitarist like Steve Hackett. The sounds he generated were incredible. All amazingly talented musician’s in their own right. They have provided, in part, a musical background to my life. I would love to see them one last time.
I loved the early Genesis but somehow missed seeing them. When I think back to that era, I can remember seeing Yes, ELP, Bowie, Wishbone Ash, Family, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Soft Machine, Greenslade, Caravan and Hawkwind, so how I missed Genesis I have no idea.![]()
I'm not a fan of "white music", I'm from the era of Motown and Northern Soul, I've progressed to Jazz and have watched hundreds of black artists live both here and in the US.
I have to admit however, Phil Collins giving his all on "In the air tonight" takes some beating and the lads from Dundee I have seen live about a dozen times are no "Average White Band" either.
