I used to have a undergravel filter(many years ago). About 3" of gravel on top of it, air pipe down the vertical and it caused a downwards current dragging all the crap with it.
I use a water filter(very small) in a small tank,i nurse baby fish thro the winter, and its just enough out flow .

Like Brin says, ask the pro's...

Don’t make the mistake of putting a pretty Siamese fighting fish in the tank.

Sometimes you can get away with just one, but the barstewards tend to knock lumps off the other fish and they in turn fight back.

They even have a pop at their own reflection.

Remember Brother-in-law threatening my father, Brother-in-law kept tropical fish,
Brother-in-law joined them when I went to see him at his house. I put his head
    in the tank.

There’s wayside water gardens at Oldcotes that I’m sure will help

It was closed the other day when I drove past so can’t tell you when it’ll be open next

Haven’t been there in years so not sure if it’s still good

I think there was a place next to the Crown pub at Barnburgh, on Hang Mans Lane.
