What type are They? do they have different needs? why not buy a Tiger?
she intends to get Betta fish. Imo with the slow swimming males and fancy fins they will get battered form the fast moving water. The fish require slow moving water but the tank is 280lt so needs a. A large filter.
Do tigers need fast flowing water?

first thing. research what you need before you buy any fish as they all need different needs. Water needs to mature before adding fish. A few over a period.
in the mean time as you don't know what you are doing, face the pump against the tank not along it..how irresponsible is it to purchase live creatures with no clue?
She has done the research and is struggling to get the large filter needed for the tank size for the fish she wants. If you face the pump towards the side it bubbles over the top
Regards your last sentence I would say very

You get amonia first. Then nitrite. Then nitrates.
Nitrification process I think it's called. Nitrates are not harmful to fish
I've kept koi for 18 years so I'm guessing the process is the same 😁

Filtered water deals with chlorine in the water to make it safe

I use a water filter(very small) in a small tank,i nurse baby fish thro the winter, and its just enough out flow .

Like Brin says, ask the pro's...
This is how my tank was set-up. They don't do that type of setup now. It's all these fancy external filter box with carbon and bio balls in😠

Sometimes you can get away with just one, but the barstewards tend to knock lumps off the other fish and they in turn fight back.

They even have a pop at their own reflection.
That's what she intends to have. 😠. I've tried to tell her but when do kids listen to parents

That's prob the best bet but I'm not sure they do tropical. Think it's pond stuff mainly. I used to go to viscum water gardens. Last time I went was when Markham Grange garden centre was open.
