'Game management' is what the football authorities should be doing to protect the game, their game, for the paying customer. Other sports step in. I'm dreading this year's World Cup....99% of physios coming on will be for teams holding leads...
I think it's time football was played to a stop clock...only actual play is counted, clock stopped for all dead balls and out of play.
Agreed but they could stop it very easily especially with VAR I understood that one of the reasons for bringing it in was to stop the cheating but it's very rare you see a player booked even for a blatant dive, they just say "no pen" & get on with the game. Like game management many ways of cheating seem to be seen as just part of the game by the authorities, the latest one that bugs me (and yes we do it) is taking corners from outside the quadrant, it's so petty but bloody annoying.

By the very strict letter of the law it was a penalty because his arm made contact with the ball while in what could be described as an 'unnatural' position. Saying that, as penalties go you would struggle to find a softer one. It didn't look deliberate and it barely affected the flight of the ball. If it is deemed an offence in this case giving around an 80% chance of scoring when the actual chance was 1% is an incredibly harsh punishment. I wonder what VAR would have made of it?

I have always hated handball decisions that result in penalties especially when they are crosses or away from goal. Soft as sh!t IMO and a cheat penalty whether unnatural position or not.

If it ain't goal bound I'm not having it

I suppose the law is the law, but that was a perfect example where the punishment doesn't fit the crime. A penalty should really be awarded when the chance of a goal is prevented illegally, and in this case the chance of a goal was minimal. I know over the years we will have benefited from as many similar decisions as we've suffered from, but for a long time I've though there should be a 'semi-penalty' option in cases like this. My suggestion would be a free kick from the centre of the 'D' just outside the box with no player allowed inside the penalty area. In other words, a clear shot on goal but from 22 yards rather than 12 yards.

Ruben would be my first choice semi-penalty taker.
