That could be so, unless we’ve bought a crock

Don't read this if you are of a nervous disposition. Seeing Charlton, Ipswich and Gillingham win today the thought entered my head that our remaining opponents might be coming into form. So what did I do? I looked at the last 5 results all our remaining opponents have achieved along with the last 5 results the remaining opponents of the other teams in the top 6 and it does not make pleasant reading.

Over their last 5 games our 7 remaining opponents have won 17, lost just 9 and drawn 9 so an average of 1.7pts/game. Against current form only Plymouth have a run in equally as difficult as we do and MK/SW have it relatively easy.

    RUFC opponents 17 9 9 1.7 (W L D PPG)
    Wigan opponents 18 18 9 1.4
    MK Dons opponents 12 18 5 1.2
    Plymouth opponents 18 5 7 1.7
    Oxford opponents 12 14 9 1.3
    SW opponents 11 18 6 1.1

It's a good job form can change at the drop of a hat!

Not a great day today but at least one more team (Ipswich) can no longer catch us.

Nobody added to the list tonight

Here's another stat for the stattos amongst you if you're wondering why things seem so hard.

Last season the top 6 teams averaged 1.75 points per game over the 46 game season. This time around and to this point the top 6 are averaging 1.93 points per game. Might not seem much but it's around 7.2 points per team at this point and will be 8.3 points per team if it carries on to the end of the season. That would indicate that the top two will end up with 97/8 and 95/6 points respectively.

Where have these points come from? Last season the bottom 4 averaged 0.94 points per game but this season it's just 0.76 which again will be 8.3 points per team less over 46 games.

So basically Donny is to blame

Yes I can believe all that CAMiller. This season is indeed an extraordinary one where most games are going to form whereas in previous seasons you could guarantee that towards the end of the season there would be some strange results popping up where teams fighting off relegation would regularly beat teams near the top of the league. This season we're not seeing many "upsets" in the results, they're going to "form". We need a few of those upsets to help us out a bit in the remaining weeks of the season.

Really good stats CAM and Thank You for your research.I remember a feature in the media about 4 years ago about League 1 where there was a ridiculous lack of points between the relegation zone and the last play-off place with ,say,5 games to go.I think it was around 7.My figures maybe not be exact but, none the less, the principle remains.Something has seriously changed within the footballing ladder within this time.Finance will without doubt be playing a big part....'the have's and the have not's'! What effect has COVID had with regards to this?

Another one added to the list today. Only 2 more and we're in the playoffs but the way things have been going the last month we need to be thinking will out current haul of 80pts be just enough to get us there because it might have to be.

Beginning to regret ever starting this thread as what once seemed fun has now developed into water torture.
