O/T: - New trend in reffing?

    https://twitter.com/GlapwellGladia1/...05098072772608

Joking apart, what can be done about the refereeing crisis? This weekend, one Notts League had enough refs to cover just 30% of games.

If they can't find enough women refs to replace them, not a lot I should imagine, short of rewarding refs with fees the clubs probably can't afford.

30% is a crazy figure and quite possibly a canary in the coal mine when it comes to filling traditional male roles that require confidence, assertiveness, un-emotional quick decision making and leadership skills, all now widely dismissed as "toxic masculinity".

Maybe a new anti-ref chant there. Instead of ‘you’re not fit to referee’’ , how about ‘toxic masculinity, you’re full of toxic masculinity’.

If it catches on I want copyright.

Anybody who watched football in the 1970s/80s will probably enjoy this.....

From 1981, an edition of the BBC Schools series "Scene" entitled, "Don't shoot the ref".

Take up refereeing? Why would you?

90 minutes of abuse - no thanks

I manage a grass roots team and we were told last season there’s only enough refs to cover 25% of games. U12’s no longer get assigned a ref unless one is free after the older groups are sorted. It’s been a problem for years but Covid exacerbated it, as the reffing courses were cancelled. Also the girls game is booming so clubs are doubling in size.
I try and install a respect for refs into my team but week on week it’s undermined by parents berating a 15year old ref for giving a throw in to the other team.
