I remember that Leicester football special and the police escort to the old ground. The last football special I was on was another FA Cup tie - forth round tie at Huddersfield in 1984.

Unfortunately we blew a golden play off promotion opportunity in probably the most important match we ever played there. Had we won at York instead of drawing on the final day of 86/87, Jimmy Sirrel would have been in charge for a semi-final against Sunderland and potentially a 2 leg final v Swindon.

The less said about the most important ever home game v York, the better.

Looks a much tougher fixture now than it did at the start of the season.
Even now I remember the feeling of abject misery coming back on the bus from that final day game in 87. At least I think it was that one.

Was that Leicester special the one the police made you walk down the double carriage way then past Leicester tigers ground.

Anyway, when we arrived, quite surprisingly, there was a large number of police waiting for us and insisted on escorting us all to the ground. Quite scenic route too, as I recall.
At one point, I asked a copper why we were being treated like hooligans as we were Notts County and were decent supporters.
The copper apologised and explained that York’s next home match was against Man United and they were just having a dress rehearsal!!
Happy days though. I used to love those Magpie Specials 👍
Me too, the Magpie Specials organised by Claude Bishop and Neil Hook (I think) in the 70s were the best away trips I had. I would have been at the York game you mention, and if it’s the one I’m thinking of their goalkeeper was Graham Crawford. It was the days of skimpy shorts and PC was an unknown term. Crawford had a bit of an effeminate appearance for a footballer, and a Notts fan shouted “you’re a puff Crawford”. A young girl who supported York replied “he’s brilliant”. The response from the Notts fan was “you’re a brilliant puff Crawford”!

Weird how random memories like that last for so long.

I remember a 2-1 away win at York being the catalyst for Sam Allardyce's success as our manager. He'd had no win in his first three months and we were already relegated from League One, but that result in an apparently meaningless fixture was the turning point towards a brilliant title run the following year.

Are we saying it's a dodgy away day then ?

All fans on the same bus, never a good idea.
