Is the right answer. At the moment CS should be cover for AJ and nothing more.

I thought Macari was very good yesterday. Impressed both in an attacking and defending sense. I read some good things when he was slowly introduced last season to the first team.

Delighted he’s been signed on a 3 year contract. Early days but next season he could be the Notts player who the fans panic and overreact to potentially losing when rumoured interest or a bid is lodged.

    on

They are not idiots they were commenting on his performance which was poor. We know he isn't a left winger but that is what he's judged on in this case.

What worries me is that Maynard even thought the experiment needed to be carried out.

This Head Coach seems to put square pegs in round holes with alarming regularity, perhaps because he spends too much time messing with tactics and formations to counter and confuse the opposition, and not enough time working on what formation best suits the players he's got. It's extremely frustrating to see what looks like a good team sheet, and then realise in the opening few minutes that they've been set up in a way that undermines their chances.

That's how I see it. I can't see how Jatta on Scott can work as a front two, because they both need to play the same position to be seen at their best. Jatta's performances and goalscoring record make him the clear first choice, but it means no starting place for Scott.

I know durham is a big fan of Cedwyn Scott, but I just haven't seen what he's seen. I would love to see Scott bag a goal from somewhere, because he hasn't scored in ages and is clearly low on confidence.

calm down dear. He's clearly trying to make the best side from who's fit to start, and that's obviously changing quickly.

Well if he is, he got it pretty wrong for at least the first 60 minutes on Sunday.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now though. If the set-up on Thursday against Grimsby actually looks like it's designed to maximise the players' talents rather than stifle them, then I fancy us to do well.

you're suggesting SM might NOT be trying to make the best side from who's available? Weird.

Seems clear to me that SM's first XI is still taking shape (Matty Palmer, Tequila, Robertson, + ?) as they get fit/signed. There will be an element of experiment as he sees how all the new and returning players actually combine in real games, and I'd say the club is due some criticism for the lateness of that, but really think this extreme bedwetting is a bit juvenile.

The jury is still out on SM imo, and results aren't right yet obvs, but we're not losing (bar penalties), we're scoring, and we're controlling 75 - 90% of the 3 games we've played against reasonably good opposition. Patience and trust in the bros recruitment at this point is surely more likely to benefit Notts than jumping back on the mgmt roundabout?

Unlike some I’m not totally against playing JJ on the right, that’s where he played before joining us and it gives him 2 options of going down the line or cutting in. He was becoming less effective second half of last season when teams were doubling up on him more even when he played on the left.
Crowley I understand with the injuries, someone needs to link the defence and midfield and he’s the best to do it I believe, it’s temporary.
I think Scott can do a 10 role to some extent, but he’s no good wide, hopefully with a few bodies back he can tweak it now.
On the plus the side clearly the team is playing for him as I would say all 3 games the players put a very good shift in.

Hi Stuart, is it really ‘extreme bedwetting’ to say that Scott shouldn’t be starting a game as a left winger, purely so the opposition don’t know which formation we’re playing (until they work it out like everyone else 30 seconds in)?

Macari, Platt, Bedeau were again warming up as a back three so the whole focus of our preparation was catching them out. Well done, that worked - but then we’re stuck with a left side of Chicksen and Scott so is it really worth it? A bit of unpredictability is useful, but it shouldn't be the core focus when picking a team. It’s far more important that we build our identity and our players know their roles, rather than changing system every game and the manager being able to say ‘ah, wasn’t I clever’ in his post-match interview. How often do Pep and Arteta change their formations? There’s a reason, and it isn’t because they’re not as astute as Maynard.

In terms of playing alternatives to what we’ve got currently, Scott as a back-up striker is fine. No experiment was needed to know he hasn’t got the skillset to play as a winger at this level. If we’re playing the set-up we did on Sunday regularly we probably need an attacking wide player brought in (unless Tsaroulla plays further forward). For wing backs I think we’re covered with Jones, Gordon, Tsaroulla, Chicksen and Austin (who played well there whenever called upon last season).
