O/T:- Convicted rioter commits suicide in prison

2 years and 8 months seems a bit extreme for shouting at police 'scum' and 'child killers' as well as holding a placard accusing the establishment of corruption.

He had previously attempted suicide twice and was of poor health.

Am I missing something with regards to the charges?

I realise that I made a typo in the title .

Swale - could you correct my spelling in the title please?

He was charged and convicted of violent disorder, max sentence 5 years. Two years and 8 months for the shouting 'scum' and 'child killers' sounds extreme but I doubt any of us were present in court to see all the evidence presented in court so are not really in a position to judge.

    Violent disorder:

"Under section 2 of the Act, it must be proved that:

three or more persons present together
    used or threatened unlawful violence
so that the conduct of them (taken together) would cause a person of reasonable firmness (had such a person been present at the scene) to fear for their own personal safety."

So at the lower threshold of the offence all that was required was for three people together to threaten violence that would cause a 'firm person' who doesn't actually have to be there to fear for their safety.

After you've corrected the spelling Swale, please could you merge this with the UK Party Politics thread?

No need at all to start a new one.

As it is on a specific (and 'theoretically' not strictly party political) new news item I'll let it run a while and then merge it if (when!) it goes the way of most of these.

ETA for bingo purposes: 'Two tier Keir', 'MSM', 'Farage riots', 'small boats', 'The Establishment'.

It's a fact that " The Death Penalty " (Capital Punishment ) was abolished in 1967 but people are still dying in prison.
The State has a moral ( and legal ? ) duty to ensure the safety of all people in prisons including inmates and staff. Therefore, other than acute and unexpected medical occurrences,no one should die in prison
A minor media outlet , allegedly, claimed that two other people , jailed for offences during the protests, have been badly beaten after being a minority presence on their cell wing blocks ?
It is always concerning that first time offenders, or remand inmates, are often placed in cells with violent, long term career prisoners .
