I went to see the first Live Stiffs tour in 1977. Elvis Costello, Ian Dury, Wreckless Eric, Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe amongst others. A grand day (well, night) our Grommet
... and a couple of iffy ones if the truth be known.
It's a fairly recently put together collection. I had a fair few of them back in the day on UK Tamla Motown. Those, along with the rest of my collection disappeared shortly after my first marriage collapsed. Went away for a weekend, came back and they were gone. She claimed not to know anything about their disappearance... she did.
Nearly got one of them back 2 or 3 years ago. Saw the Apollas, Mr Creator up on eBay but only in VG condition. Knew it was mine as I'd, foolishly, written my name on the label. My name in, unmistakably, my scrawl. In the condition it was in, it was probably worth $50. I contacted the seller, in the US, told him the story and offered him $100. He said he preferred to see where it would go in the auction. I put in a snipe bid of $150 as it expired in the middle of our night. Went for $175. Gutted. 3 weeks later, same seller, another copy. Better condition. Got it for $80. Straight in touch with the seller and asked him if he'd contact the previous buyer and ask him if he'd swap. This 2nd copy could go straight to him. Once he received it he could post my old copy to me and I'd pay the postage. Seller claimed not to have the name and address details of the buyer anymore. Gutted.
I have a few (more successful) repurchases in my collection, including a Dictators album bought in Derby, stolen at a party in Heanor and repurchased many years later at a record fair in Lichfield. I also see the occasional Canadian import album for sale that I?m 99% sure I would have sold when I had what I laughingly call ?an import business? back in my 30?s
All good fun but to me what matters is what?s in the grooves not the ?
Quite possibly but 45 years on it's hard enough to remember my name let alone one track at a gig. It was in Birmingham that I saw the tour
Talking to 2 blokes at the Selecter gig. Topic got round to other bands and one of them mentioned UB40s Red red wine being one of his favourites. Both were gobsmacked to learn that it's a cover.
They covered the reggae version released by Tony Tribe in 1969. The version before that was in 1968 by Jimmy James and the Vagabonds who had covered Neil Diamond's original. ND wrote it too.
Remember that Ric Tic record I posted about 2 weeks ago? Damned thing is still in transit. Started off in Detroit, Michigan. Next scanned in Chicago, Illinois. Then Palatine, Illinois. Then Elk Grove Village, Illinois. Then back to Chicago, Illinois. Then back to Palatine, Illinois. Then Elk Grove Village, Illinois again. Back to Chicago, Illinois. Then Des Plains, Illinois and now it's back in Chicago, Illinois.
Will it ever get here?
Looking at all your tastes I'm sure my concert of choice last night wouldn't be a popular one.
Was in Nottingham, anyone want to guess who? You might be 'shocked '
