Tesco rolls out 'VAR referees' at self-checkout
Tesco has installed cameras above self-checkouts to catch shoplifters, according to reports.
The VAR-style system uses AI to monitor when an item has not been scanned properly.
Much like a video referee, the screen then displays an instant replay to the customer.
The video is accompanied by the message: "The last item wasn't scanned properly. Remove from bagging area and try again."
The cameras were reported to have already been installed in some Sainsbury's stores.
Some customers were unimpressed by the news, with one posting on Reddit: "If they can't trust me to scan my shopping properly, perhaps they should employ staff to scan it for me. Perhaps at a larger checkout. Oh wait..."
Another said: "Can't wait to hang around for four minutes while the ref camera decides if my carrots are two milligrams too heavy."
One person wrote: "This country is in such a state. Baby formula in metal security nets, cheddar in DVD boxes, scan your receipt to exit the checkouts, and now slow-mo cameras on the self-serve checkouts."
A spokesperson for Tesco told Money that the new system "helps customers using self-service checkouts identify if an item has not been scanned properly, making the checkout process quicker and easier".
They added: "We are always looking at technology to make life easier for our customers."
Sky News has contacted Sainsbury's for comment.
Tesco getting in on the act! 🤣🤣
See the fun benefitted from more poor refereeing, this time VAR get it right by calling ref over to have a look and he sticks with his decision, hopeless officials up here can't get it right between them
When you think in Paisley in January, we conceded a pen for a boy diving over Holt with no contact in stoppage time, that VAR didn't deem an error
Then the equally soft penalty also in January the fun got, that VAR intervened to get the ref to look at
Neither decision cost us the result, unlike the Dalby one v Hibs but same time the derby last August we didn't get the blatant hand ball in the last minute which likely cost us the win
Hibs last week imo Sevelj is clearly fouled and you see the pen Celtic got v Killie and the decisions that went fit hearts at Ibrox of all places, it seems the inconsistencies are getting worse as are the competence in general up here
Livi penalty looked very poor at Dens, why no var check. Dees penalty looked a stonewalled yet a var check. Baffling.
The general quality of ALL officialdom and administration is nothing short of third world standard and probably with the same level of corruption as Ukraine.........
Just sheer shyte is used in all games, but where the OF or Hearts are involved they always get the benefit.
Theres loads here, very obvious when it happens, but no one pretends to be pious ant better than thou.
But the quality of the entire SFA system is nothing short of a joke.
VAR i just being used poorly by poor refs. They are using it to re-referee incidents and they are actively looking for reasons to either give penalties or chop off goals. There is no application of common sense. The game would be much better if they were miked up and you could hear their reasoning at the time if the incident. We are then scrutinising decisions for days after the game and getting more and more disillusioned by the standard. Look back at some of the games prior to VAR and you can see definite cheating by refs. VAR has cut down on that but we still aren't doing enough to cut it out completely.
Look at the officials involved in the European ties, no fuss. Whereas Brother Beaton and the rest are just sh!te. Just hire foreign officials for the remainder of the season. Can't be any worse................
