I dinna blame him for not staying: he was returning from injury when he came here and once he'd proved he was over that there were clubs willing and able to pay him far more than we could. You can't expect a guy to settle for earning a fraction of his worth out of loyalty to a club he'd only been at a few months.
I do, however, blame him for losing interest in giving us 100% for the remainder of his contract here. From the point we made it clear we wouldn't be able to match his wage demands for a renewal, his commitment levels dropped right off. There was still about half the season to go, and we were still paying his wages. It was highly unprofessional.
Based on his form prior to that, he was a much better than average SPL player, but is he still at 34, playing in Cyprus?
Maybe he's got more left in the tank than I fear, and maybe he will get his attitude right this time round, but it's a gamble I'd prefer we didn't take.
