They bought the club for £8 million because that’s all what the club was worth.
The attraction of Barnsley was that the price was only £8 million - there were no big debts hung around the clubs neck.
How many Championship clubs could claim that ???

Plus Barnsley was in the Championship.
It offered a great business opportunity to work from.
As things stand now - if they sold - i doubt they would recoup the money laid out on buying the club and buying players and paying wages.
But they eventually will.
