My mom used to work in the key accounts department in Sankeys Bilston. One lunchtime she went for a drink with a friend in the Pipe Hall and John Osborne was at the bar. I think he had something to do with the Bert Williams thing.
Anyway he gladly signed an autograph for her. But if it's people having a lunchbreak surely they don't want to be pestered signing thing.
I went to Carlisle with Albion in the cup, when we got to the ground Jeff Astle was outside and this kid had a scrap book, he kept asking Jeff to sign a photo and then turning a page to sign another. I thought Jeff would get fed up and tell him to do one, but he signed every page smiling and chatting all the time.
That's the difference between the players of yesterday and today, but even back then Jeff was one on his own.
