re: Crawley Town v Wolves Match Day Thread

What started off as a trip to Crawley, with a stop off in a place called Ryegate, ended up with having to endure 90 minutes of Wolves. Crawley deserved everything that got from the game, three points.

Wolves as a side were poor, right from the off we never got going. The easy stuff we have seen in recent weeks, ie passing to team mates, looking good on the ball, going forward, never happened.

Wolves continuously gave the ball away in all areas of the pitch. Wolves took the lead against the run of play, Henry's effort from distance all we had to show. The old saying in football is, you're at your most vulnerable when you have just scored, and so it proved. Wolves failed to clear their lines and a few players, ie Batth and Golbourne not taking responsibility to clear the ball, easy tap in from close range. The second goal and winner soon arrived, Tubbs lifting the ball over Ikeme, no more as stated earlier than they deserved.

A change was needed, and soon it came, but made absolutely

Wolves 71, thanks for the report. I have just watched the highlights on Sky Sports, the playing surface looked dreadful. I know it is the same for both sides, but how much do you think it effected our recent style of play, e.g., getting it down on the floor and passing it about.

I warned on another thread, before the turn of the year, that our performances could be compromised by the potential poor quality of some of the pitches in this league. We are lucky with our home pitch and teams are coming to us and are playing football on it.

I still think there will be more twists and turns before the end of the season. It is a worry though that we can go to our closest rival, Brentford and beat them 3-0 while only picking up one point from Shrewsbury and Crawley.

I have been thinking about this match crunch in March and have wondered whether we should have made changes in anticipation of being fatigued. There's no way an XI can make it through 8 matches in a month unchanged without limping through the last couple. We have a tendency to leave things alone that aren't broke, but maybe we should have started Edwards or Evans and given some of the MF a break. Go to a traditional 4-4-2 for a couple matches and get Clarke on the field.

Sorry Mich but can't agree, we have been loosing the knack of winning ,which we were doing , despite not playing particularly well. I have feeling the players have been reading their own hype over the last few weeks and they are far from the winning line. These are young 20+ players training 5/6 days a week and 2 matches a week should be a doddle.

Thanks for the report Gav - excellent as usual!

Please don't take this as a criticism, but a minor point for information. Understandable spelling if you haven't seen it in print - Ryegate is in fact Reigate. I prefer your spelling - makes more sense!

When we stopped, i was just told we were in a place that was called "Ryegate", i just typed it as thought it was spelt. You're right i actually never saw a sign post with it on. Glad you pointed it out as i'm not from round that way.

The pitch was bad, especially by the half way line and the dug outs, loads of sawdust. I can go back to the Brentford pitch, a difficult surface, but one where Wolves were
