Not sure how tricky (excuse the pun) that group was though Tricky..

Did he just have a pick yourself 11 who got him through with no pressure?

He has lots of sweets in this jar this time but will he pick the new Toffee like he should?

For me circumstance will dictate how successful he is, not his tactical genius.. Injury or suspension might just force his hand and be his saviour.

He's not a bad manager and certainly better then harry imo. But if the highly decorated and respected capello can't do anything with England you cant really blame woy for not achieving. We just aren't that good.

lets be honest, most teams play their reserves until the semi finals. nothing to really shout home about imho.

where you could link it to clough, he's good at making a team solid and tough to beat.

he doesn't excel at the top level when you need to win. people say he's a good tactician. I didn't see that when pirlo destroyed us 2 years ago for Italy. I also haven't been that when we've had to break down stubborn teams in qualifying. everyone knows what pirlo does if you give him time and space. I found that particularly disappointing seen as hodgson spent time at inter.

edit: I've just found an excellent article by paul parker that puts

    A tough group in 94.

Columbia were some peoples outside favourites (they destroyed Argentina 5 - 0 in the build up to the finals. USa - hosts. Romania - golden gen - Hagi, Radaciou, Dumitescu, Popescu - very good team

Around that time Switzerland were ranked 3 in the world. I know the FIFA rankings are not the best measure of a great team but it still says something!
