I think that's a tad unfair. He did remarkably well with what little he had at his disposal last term and realised if things didn't change, Palace might not be so lucky 2nd time of asking.

If a manager can't be relied upon to choose players he wants or to sign players when he already laid the groundwork, it does make his situation pretty untenable.

We of course remember the grief we got under the AP, which was formed in good faith following our disastrous buying under Platt. They eventually took things little too far and started rejecting every request the manager made unless a lot of pleading was done. We ended up short of players in key positions.
