    James and Hinton comparison

There is a bit of a discussion on the Burnley site regarding James v Hinton. Some seem to think James was the better player, others take a more balanced view and recognise the merits of both players.

My own opinion is that Hinton was better than James, but maybe we did not see the best of Leighton and he was always going to be compared with Hinton, which was always going to be a hard act to follow.

James was a very good player, but Hinton was on a completely different level from what I saw of both of them.

Gladys by a mile. Oh for his free kicks and corners now. As Cloughie said he was the best crosser of the ball in football. He was criticed by some fans because if he lost the ball he wouldn't chase back and tackle, he also backed out of a 50/50 ball. Clough said that he couldn't care less what he was poor at, he only wanted to him to get better at what he was good at!!!. James was OK but net in the same class.

However if you look at the facts, like Rattea, you would prove James was better for scoring:

    Hinton - 1967-75 - 295 app - 83 goals
    James - 1975-77 - 89 app - 21 goals

But there were no stats for assists in those days.

If you actually look at those facts, then Hinton scored 0.28 goals per appearance whereas James scored 0.24 goals per appearance which suggests that Hinton had a better goal scoring record.

So I suppose you are right, if you look at them Ratty style then James has the better scoring record!

but were they against the same teams with the same players and under similar conditions. Without this any comparision is futile FACT

I saw them both and really there was no comparison - the number of assists Gladys provided is legendry - those of us who were there don't need recorded stats; we know. And as for those white boots!!!!!

They say Beckham was a good dead ball specialist, but he was not in the same league as our Gladys
