It's an absolute freak incident, and a horrible day for all involved. I doubt we'll see anything like this again for a very long time.

Died at the age of 25 playing the sport he loved. Thoughts go out to his family friend's and team mates. Also the poor lad who was bowling. Must be horrendous for him. Sad day for sport..

I sincerely hope not. It is almost certain to cause a reappraisal of safety standards in cricket gear, which is to the good. To think that when I played cricket all players wore was knee pads and a box.Originally Posted by D_D

Sad news.
Head injurys seem to be more prevelant today than ever oddly. Does some of the safety gear give a false sense of of security.
In American football they have a high suiside and depression rate due to the constant head blows I have read. It's not just boxing that this is a major risk.
On a slightly different note: Three years to the day Gary Speed passed away also.
We are all rocked by it over here. Touching to see all the tributes from everyone overseas.
Young lad and a top bloke
RIP HUGHESY

Sad news indeed and a bit of a shock Like you Aussie I'm sure you have had a lot of coverage here about it but did I hear right that he was wearing an "older type of helmet"??
I feel for the bowler he must be going through hell as will Hughesys family and friends but it was a freak accident but it won't make it any easier for the bowler who looked terrible when he left the hospital
Very sad to see young men die while playing sports.
His death reminded of a brush of my own. Once silly me in a school practise of field hockey sat on the boards in the goal talking with my keeper. It was a boring game with just as useless players. Happily chatting and whoosh a ball flew past my head into goal. 1 cm to the right and I'd have concussion at the very least.
Anyway very sad to hear of Hughees, a similar age boxer in Singapore died on the same day, from a brain illness he sustained just before his first amateur fight.
RIP to both men. Long live sports and I hope the bowler is okay too, psychologically.
Reports from the hospital is they have never seen anything like it before and don't really expect to see it again so nothing to do with the helmet as such, just an unfortunate accident. A really nice guy, no crap or bull****, if Cricket didn't work out for him then all he wanted was to go back to the farm and help his parents out. A genuine person in the world, a truely sad set of circumstances and thankfully no-one is casting any blame on the bowler however how would anyone feel in the same circumstances. All sporting codes are honouring his passing here in Oz with a public display of people placing cricket bats on display with caps on the handles in his honour. Junior cricketers traditionally "retired" if they made 50 runs however this has been changed to 63 runs in his memory.
Should have mentioned the change to 63 runs was because that was his score before being hit by the bouncer.
