These were the same people who thought that the answer was to give Clough additional finds and it would solve the issue, the fact that McClaren has come in achieved what he has without massive injections of cash and buying expensive players suggests they may have been a tad wide of the mark![/quote]

Thats not quite accurate Swales. Its very clear Clough didnt quite have the contacts that McClaren has, but he did do a good job with the resources he did have. I didnt agree with his sacking, and I still am not sure by Sam Rush, regardless of his award, but bringing McClaren in, has worked better than even the most optimistic Ram would have believed.

Clough was told when he took the job that he had to cut the wage budget by £11m and keep the club in championship status.

There was no academy or u21 squads set up as paul Jewell had cut them as a cost cutting exercise

The thing is so many fickle fans look only at results on the pitch and need to seriously consider results off it before posting drivel and saying clough didn't do a good job on the resources he had.

I ask one question.. What bloody resources?
His transfer budget was nothing more than a wip round

Hey Chilli, good to have you back! Always had you down as the best poster on here, and defo worse off on this Board in your absence. Stick around pal!

On the topic and where the thread has headed...

IMO, I dont think Shteeve could have been as successful as Nigel was with the remit he had 5 years ago, and likewise, I dont think Nigel could have delivered the success Shteeve has over the last year. Both were the right people for the job at the right time. Hats off to the Board for recognising this and making the right apppointments at the right time

Nigel certainly achieved alot at DCFC in terms of steadying a sinking ship and fitting the rigging to give us a decent future. I dont think he had what was needed to take us to the next level, and Shteeve and Co have given us that. By his own recognition, Shteeve has called out what he inheritted and meritted Nigel for his fine work, and I think only a minority of fans wont give Nigel any credit for that

So for me, credit to both m

Perhaps you'd care to do a bit of research and find out the transfer fees paid for Bryson, keogh, Barker, Russell not to mention wages for "free" transfers such as Tyson before posting such utter inaccuracies???

To say Clough had no resources other than a whip round is clearly not true at all.

Clough had on average say £1m to spend on players a year. Much of his transfers were paid for by his own wealing and dealing whether that be more cost cutting in wages or selling a player on

£1m a year is peanuts in comparison to what most other managers spent.

Bryson was bought from the money raised selling commons
Keogh was bought from money raised by selling shackell
Russell was bought from money raised by selling brayford
Barker was bought from money raised by selling Tito villa

Now apart from the players clough sold to buy his own team tell me how much extra he spent and divide that over his 5 years in charge and you will see he really didn't spend much at all

Mclaren has spent £3.5m on transfer fees in a year (Thorne £3.2m & £300,000 Christie) with no transfer fees coming in. That's a deficit of £3.5m.. Did clough have that deficit in total on fees over the 5 years.. Just a thought

Are we now seeing that progress does indeed come at a financial cost

    I rest my case

Well FailDale I would say to Chris's response ... Ouuuuuuuuchhhhhhhh!

You've been well and truly owned on that one!

To be fair Clough didn't put nearly all his eggs in one basket such as what has nearly happened with Thorne.

Remeber most of the summer was taken up negotiating ans securing longer most of Cloughs player

Seem to remember the Conor salmon saga dragging on for some time and we all know how that one went!! Wont mention Chris maguire and his value for money acquisition. Some of cloughies signings worked out for the better of derby county, but he did buy & loan some tripe...

The maguire one is interesting because he was loaned out twice to clubs who paid a loan fee then he was sold on so we only lost wages on this one and that wouldn't be much

My point overall being clough overall didn't spend anywhere near what people think when you take into it other busines
