Hang on in there, Steve Davis.

Heard in Praise and Grumble tonight some very disconcerting news surrounding the possible future of our manager. It mentioned that he is being linked with the vacant manager's job at Barnsley.

My message to Steve is this. Stay put and complete the great job that you have started. Of course, you will no doubt earn far more money elsewhere, but you will not have the same support that the Alex chairman affords you and as regards to job security, it will be hazardous to say the least. The fans at this great club love you, Steve...so please remain with the Alex.

Its a tricky one even though they are in the same league as us but obviously a much bigger club with gates up to 10,000 sometimes and so would expect any offer to be very tempting to him.

Lets say they could offer Steve 300 grand a year or even more over a three year deal. That is possibly three times more than he gets here. Plus a chance of moving even higher if he is successful with a chance of even a better deal there if he was?

Would any of us refuse that sort of offer?

I don't think he could tbh. Remember that we are not guaranteed we stay up and he will be under pressure either way.

    In fact, its no brainer.

This is all we need! Just when things seem to be going ok for once something likes this always comes up to disrupt things.

If there is any truth in it i believe Steve would jump at the chance - just hope its not the case

Steve has this time been very quick to dismiss the speculation with Barnsley. It is the media creating the story as usual. Think Steve has realised that his position is safe even when we were going through that really poor run at the start the club stuck with him, other clubs would have hit the eject button. I may be wrong but it is the first time Steve has said he wants to take us back to the championship, so he seems to be here for the long term which gives us great stability. Although from the outside we may not be an attractive club to manage where else would Steve have so much control/influence over how the club is run.

That's a very encouraging outlook, one which should attract more people to come along and support the club. The trouble is many folks look for instant gratification (Premier League style) instead of watching players develop and increase their on-the-field confidence which delivers greater entertainment for the supporter.

I don't think anybody would stand in the way of Steve's career development, and I certainly think he would be a good manager at a higher level. Not a 'bigger club' - for all the reasons of insecurity and obsessions with 'points-are-all-we're-after'- but a Championship club certainly.

He deserves more than any of the players as a salary, plus a big win bonus, but until we start creating that sort of wealth then the threat of £ signs will remain.

Perhaps, if Dario does decide to retire, Steve could be offered his type of contract?

I'd dearly love to see SD commit himself to my club for ever, but it's not going to happen. He's already given me some of the best days out of my life!

AL, your idea is an excellent one being offered a Dario type DOF role where he could be paid a lot more as Dario was on what 200 grand and SD a 100 grand (Just guessing mind?) so combining some of that would be very tempting alongside the stability o

The fact that this is the second time he's been linked with a vacancy at Barnsley since he's been our manager should tell him all he needs to know.

Probably happen again in about 18 months time...

Barnsley thumped by Crawley today (five). If he does go there, he could be seeing a side facing back to back relegations. His job is secure here at the Alex, with hopefully more opportunity to push on next season. SD will get his chance to move on (if that is what he wants) when the time is right.
