    New Slant On Signings

Looks like Bent will sign for us soon. Sam Rush said on RD today that the club will try and sign players that have been identified by Chris Evans as has always been the case. Does this mean that Mac cannot be blamed for the poor signings? If so probably Evans should be on his bike as well.

    re: New Slant On Signings

This was covered in another thread a few weeks ago.

The manager tells Evans what kind of player or position he needs. Evans goes out and makes a dossier on 10 possible players. Then the manager chides from those.

The manager has the option to pick none.

I used the example of a recruitment agency may bring candidates to me so I don't have to go to open markets self and weed through. I may look closer at some of the candidates but ultimately not take any one if they don't come up to what's required which I have done. The final buck stops with me so in my book
    It does with the manager.

Evens theoretically makes the managers job easier but the manager/coach still has to do their job.

What is odd is Rush stated to one of our posters on here at a gathering in London that Mcclaren was brought on partly for his contacts to get a better quality signing apparently? That seems to contradict the process in essence!

Possibly - but could just have meant that Evans had a wider pool to draw up his list from (i.e. including players that may not have considered coming to us if Mac wasn't there - would we have got Ince or Bent through the door if not for the Mac factor?).
Hopefully, the last couple of seasons have raised our profile so that we are now fishing in a bigger pond - and if it is to be Clement as new head coach, he seems to be well respected throughout the game, so that may well continue...

Bent went to Brighton so I'm sure even Clough would have got him. Ince too he's unproven at PL level and needed games. People forget we were already getting loans from the likes of Ex Real Madrid players.

Difference is I don't think Clough was allowed the money, or there is a school of thought he though he could get better without wasting so much on bigs. Evidence since seems to support Cloughs work on this front as securing his players long term was a priority.

As for profile we had a rising profile at the point claret took over and oddly form against teams suggested a top six finish.

I just don't see evidence that either Mcclaren or Evans have made an improvement. The opposite and seems reflected in a The comments of Rush and decline in league performance last season.

Question is is Mcclaren appears to be held accountable why on the face of it hasn't Evans?

    Ok
If bent is signing iminently, what does this mean...

1.he is signing not knowing who the manager will be?
2.he knows who the manager will be?
3.he couldn't care who the manager is?

Do players care who the manager is?
If Chris Evans puts a number of playerss to a manager for sign off...who has he put Darren bents to.

    Is clement already done.

    of course:

Option 4 could be we are signing players without knowing who the manager is which would seem to contradict Sam's interview...but would seem to be a distinct possibility.

Be a lot happier when we start replenishing the defence

I guess one advantage of this approach is that your not saddled with all of a previous managers signings so has some impartiality about it. However, I would like to see Clement use these 'connections' to bring his own steer in what we need...Bale could do with a cuddle

Looking forward to who we bring in. Not wholly convinced in Bent but his goal scoring record suggests I'm wrong I would suggest.
